The Prophet ๏ทบ taught his companions a specific supplication to recite when beginning any journey โ a short but profound dua drawn directly from the Quran that every Muslim should have memorized.
The Dua for Traveling
Transliteration:
Subแธฅฤna-lladhฤซ sakhkhara lanฤ hฤdhฤ wa mฤ kunnฤ lahลซ muqrinฤซn, wa innฤ ilฤ Rabbinฤ la-munqalibลซn
Translation:
"Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished it ourselves. And to our Lord we shall surely return."
Source: Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14; Muslim 1342
This supplication is not a human composition โ it is taken word for word from the Quran. When you recite it, you are reciting the speech of Allah as a dua. The closing words, wa innฤ ilฤ Rabbinฤ la-munqalibลซn, are a reminder that the final destination of every journey is Allah Himself.
When and How to Recite
The Prophet's ๏ทบ complete practice when beginning a journey was:
- Say Allahu Akbar three times
- Recite the travel dua above
- Then add: Allฤhumma hawwin สฟalaynฤ safaranฤ hฤdhฤ wฤแนญwi สฟannฤ buสฟdahu ("O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance")
Recite this sequence when you board a plane, get into a car, or begin any mode of transport. No repetition is required โ say it once with attention to the meaning.
If you are sending off a loved one, say to them:
Arabic:
ุฃูุณูุชูููุฏูุนู ุงูููููู ุฏูููููู ููุฃูู ูุงููุชููู ููุฎูููุงุชููู ู ุนูู ููููู

We have reached the morning and at this very time all sovereignty belongs to Allah. All praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things omnipotent.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyah fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyah fi deeni wa dunyaya wa ahli wa maali
O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the next. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth.
Abu Dawud 4:316, Ibn Majah 2:332
Virtues and Rewards
The travel dua carries multiple layers of reward and protection:
The traveler's supplication is accepted. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Three supplications are answered without doubt: the dua of the oppressed, the dua of the traveler, and the dua of the parent for their child." (Tirmidhi 3598) While you are on the road โ in an airport, on a highway, waiting at a station โ your duas carry special weight. Use this time for all your heartfelt needs, not only the prescribed travel duas.
It is a Quranic remembrance. Because the travel dua is taken directly from Surah Az-Zukhruf, reciting it counts as both dhikr and Quran recitation, combining two acts of worship in one.
It instills tawakkul. The phrase "we could never have accomplished it ourselves" is an acknowledgment that the vehicle, the road, and the safe arrival are all from Allah โ not from your own effort or the machine beneath you.
Dua for Returning from Traveling
When you return home, the Prophet ๏ทบ would say Allahu Akbar three times upon seeing his city, then recite:
Arabic:
ุขููุจูููู ุชูุงุฆูุจูููู ุนูุงุจูุฏูููู ููุฑูุจููููุง ุญูุงู ูุฏูููู
Transliteration:
ฤyibลซna tฤสพibลซna สฟฤbidลซna li-Rabbinฤ แธฅฤmidลซn
Translation:
"We return, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord."
Source: Bukhari 1797, Muslim 1342
It is also sunnah to pray two voluntary rak'ahs of gratitude after arriving home safely. The journey that began with reliance on Allah ends with praise to Him.

What is the main dua for traveling in Islam?
The main dua for traveling is recited when boarding a vehicle: 'Subhana-alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina la-munqalibun.' It comes from Surah Az-Zukhruf (43:13-14) and was recorded by Muslim (1342). It translates as: 'Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished it ourselves. And to our Lord we shall surely return.'
Is a traveler's dua accepted in Islam?
Yes. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Three supplications are answered without doubt: the dua of the oppressed, the dua of the traveler, and the dua of the parent for their child.' (Tirmidhi 3598 โ graded as hasan). Travel is therefore one of the best times to make heartfelt personal supplications beyond just the prescribed travel duas.
What dua do you say when returning from traveling?
Upon returning, recite: 'Ayibuna, ta'ibuna, 'abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun' โ 'We return, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.' (Bukhari 1797, Muslim 1342). It is also sunnah to say Allahu Akbar three times upon seeing your city, and to pray two voluntary rak'ahs of gratitude after arriving home.
How do you start the travel dua โ do you say Allahu Akbar first?
Yes. The Prophet's ๏ทบ practice was to say 'Allahu Akbar' three times when mounting transport, then recite the dua: 'Subhana-alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha...' This combined sequence โ three takbirs followed by the Quranic supplication โ is the complete Sunnah for beginning a journey. (Muslim 1342)
