Dua for the pain โ€” a solitary figure by a window in soft warm muted oil painting tones

Pain has many forms. There is the sharp ache of an injury, the dull weight of illness, and there is also the other kind โ€” the grief that sits in your chest, the worry that follows you to sleep, the hurt that has no name but is felt in every part of you. Islam addresses both. The Prophet ๏ทบ left us supplications for the pain of the body and the pain of the heart.

Dua for Physical Pain

When the Prophet ๏ทบ or a member of his family suffered from pain, he would place his hand on the place of pain and recite this supplication seven times.

Transliteration:

A'ลซdhu billฤhi wa qudratihฤซ min sharri mฤ ajidu wa uแธฅฤdhir

Translation:

"I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and what I guard against."

Source: Sahih Muslim, 2202

How to use it: Place your right hand on the area of pain, say Bismillah three times, then recite the dua seven times. This is the complete method narrated in the hadith.

Dua for Emotional Pain and Distress

For the pain that is not physical โ€” for grief, anxiety, sorrow, and the heaviness that descends on the heart โ€” the Prophet ๏ทบ taught a comprehensive supplication narrated in Sahih Bukhari.

Transliteration:

Allฤhumma innฤซ aสฟลซdhu bika minal-hammi wal-แธฅazan, wal-สฟajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa แธalaสฟid-dayn wa ghalabatir-rijฤl

Translation:

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from inability and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men."

Source: Sahih Bukhari, 6369

The Arabic word hamm refers to worry about what lies ahead. The word hazan refers to grief over what has already passed. Together, they cover the full weight of emotional pain โ€” the future we fear and the past we cannot change. This dua asks Allah for refuge from both.

The Dua of Yunus (AS) โ€” For When the Pain Feels Overwhelming

Yunus (AS) was swallowed by a whale, confined in three layers of darkness โ€” the darkness of the ocean, the darkness of the night, and the darkness of the whale's belly. From there, he called out to Allah.

Transliteration:

Lฤ ilฤha illฤ Anta, Subแธฅฤnaka, innฤซ kuntu mina aแบ“-แบ“ฤlimฤซn

Translation:

"There is no god but You, glory be to You. Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers."

Source: Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:87 โ€” Tirmidhi, 3505

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "No Muslim man calls upon Allah with these words in any matter except that Allah responds to him." (Tirmidhi, 3505 โ€” hasan sahih)

This dua works because it combines three things: affirming Allah's oneness, glorifying Him, and admitting one's own shortcoming. It is an act of total surrender โ€” and it is precisely that surrender which opens the door to relief. When the pain feels too great to carry, this is the dua to reach for.

The Reward of Bearing Pain with Patience

Islam does not only offer duas to remove pain โ€” it reframes the pain itself. The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

"No fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, harm, or sadness afflicts a Muslim โ€” even the prick of a thorn โ€” except that Allah expiates some of his sins through it."

Source: Sahih Bukhari, 5641; Sahih Muslim, 2573

This means that every moment of pain endured with patience and trust in Allah is not wasted โ€” it is a form of purification. The believer who is hurting is being refined, not abandoned.

The Prophet ๏ทบ also said: "How remarkable is the affair of the believer! All of his affairs are good for him โ€” and this is not the case for anyone except the believer. If something good happens to him, he is grateful and that is good for him. If something harmful happens to him, he is patient and that is good for him." (Sahih Muslim, 2999)

Patience in pain is not passive. It is an active choice to turn toward Allah rather than away from Him.

How to Turn to Allah When You Are Hurting

Recite the physical pain dua immediately. When pain strikes the body, do not wait. Place your hand on the site of pain and recite the dua seven times. This is a sunnah act and a direct means of seeking Allah's protection from the harm of what you feel.

Use the emotional pain dua as a daily habit. Grief and worry do not always announce themselves. Making this dua part of your morning adhkar means you are already seeking refuge before the heaviness settles.

Turn to the Dua of Yunus in your darkest moments. When nothing else feels like enough โ€” when the pain is too deep and words feel insufficient โ€” the call of Yunus (AS) from the depths is the right place to return to. Allah answered him then. He answers now.

Trust the process of patience. Every pain you carry with iman is expiation. Nothing is wasted with Allah.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dua do you say when you are in physical pain?

Place your hand on the site of pain and recite 'A'udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru' seven times. This is a proven Prophetic remedy narrated in Sahih Muslim (2202). The Prophet ๏ทบ taught it as a means of seeking Allah's power against the harm one feels.

Is there a dua for emotional pain and grief?

Yes. The Prophet ๏ทบ taught: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal...' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry, grief, inability, and laziness). This dua is narrated in Bukhari (6369) and directly addresses the emotional weight of hamm (worry about the future) and hazan (grief over the past).

What did the Prophet ๏ทบ say about the reward of bearing pain patiently?

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'No fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, harm, or sadness afflicts a Muslim โ€” even the prick of a thorn โ€” except that Allah expiates some of his sins through it.' (Bukhari 5641, Muslim 2573). Every moment of pain endured with patience and reliance on Allah is an act of worship.

What is the Dua of Yunus and why is it recited during hardship?

The Dua of Yunus (AS) is: 'La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu mina al-dhalimin' โ€” There is no god but You, glory be to You, I was indeed among the wrongdoers. Allah ๏ทป responded to Yunus (AS) when he called out from within three layers of darkness. The Prophet ๏ทบ said that no Muslim calls upon Allah with these words except that Allah responds to him (Tirmidhi 3505).
