Transliteration:
Allāhumma anta rabbī lā ilāha illā anta, khalaqtanī wa ana ʿabduka, wa ana ʿalā ʿahdika wa waʿdika mas-taṭaʿtu, aʿūdhu bika min sharri mā ṣanaʿtu, abū'u laka biniʿmatika ʿalayya, wa abū'u laka bidhanbī, faghfir lī fa-innahū lā yaghfiru adh-dhunūba illā ant
Translation:
"O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I am upon Your covenant and promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge before You Your blessing upon me, and I acknowledge before You my sin. So forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins but You."

Before sleeping:
- Recite Astaghfirullah as part of your pre-sleep adhkar
Virtues and Rewards
Allah ﷻ says in the Quran:
Arabic:
قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ
Transliteration:
Qul yā ʿibādī alladhīna asrafū ʿalā anfusihim lā taqnaṭū min raḥmatillāh
Translation:
"Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves — do not despair of the mercy of Allah." (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "All of the children of Adam are sinners, and the best of sinners are those who repent." (Narrated by Tirmidhi, 2499 — graded as hasan)
Seeking forgiveness also has worldly benefits. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever makes istighfar abundantly, Allah will grant him relief from every worry, a way out from every hardship, and will provide for him from where he did not expect." (Narrated by Abu Dawud, 1518 — graded as hasan)

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best dua for forgiveness in Islam?
The most comprehensive dua for forgiveness is Sayyid al-Istighfar (the Master of Seeking Forgiveness), narrated in Sahih Bukhari. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites it in the morning with firm belief and dies that day before evening will be among the people of Paradise." (Narrated by Bukhari, 6306)
How many times should I recite Astaghfirullah for forgiveness?
The Prophet ﷺ used to say Astaghfirullah at least 70-100 times daily (Narrated by Bukhari, 6307). There is no fixed minimum required — the more you recite with sincerity, the better. Many scholars recommend making it a constant habit throughout the day.
Does Allah always forgive when you sincerely ask for forgiveness?
Yes. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: 'Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves — do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.' (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53). Sincere tawbah (repentance) with the intention not to repeat the sin is accepted.
