Here are the duas for the three stages of fasting: beginning the fast, during the fast, and breaking the fast.
Niyyah (Intention) for Fasting
The intention for fasting is made in the heart. This verbal formula is used by many Muslims to help focus the intention:
Arabic:
ููุจูุตูููู ู ุบูุฏู ููููููุชู ู ููู ุดูููุฑู ุฑูู ูุถูุงูู
Transliteration:
Wa bi-แนฃawmi ghadin nawaytu min shahri ramaแธฤn
Translation:
"I intend to fast tomorrow for the month of Ramadan."
Source: This formulation is used in classical fiqh texts. The obligation of intention is based on the hadith: "Actions are judged by their intentions." (Narrated by Bukhari, 1; Muslim, 1907)
The intention must be made before Fajr (dawn) for obligatory fasts like Ramadan. For voluntary fasts, you can make the intention before noon if you have not eaten.
Dua for Breaking the Fast (Iftar)
Arabic:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ูููู ุตูู ูุชู ููุจููู ุขู ูููุชู ููุนููููููู ุชููููููููุชู ููุนูููู ุฑูุฒููููู ุฃูููุทูุฑูุชู
Transliteration:
Allฤhumma innฤซ laka แนฃumtu wa bika ฤmantu wa สฟalayka tawakkaltu wa สฟalฤ rizqika afแนญartu
Translation:
"O Allah, for You I have fasted, in You I have believed, upon You I have relied, and with Your provision I break my fast."
Source: Narrated by Abu Dawud, 2358 โ graded as mursal (narrated without a direct companion) but widely practiced
Shorter Iftar Dua (More Authentic)
Arabic:
ุฐูููุจู ุงูุธููู ูุฃู ููุงุจูุชููููุชู ุงููุนูุฑูููู ููุซูุจูุชู ุงููุฃูุฌูุฑู ุฅููู ุดูุงุกู ุงูููููู
Transliteration:
Dhahaba al-แบama'u wabtallatil-สฟurลซqu wa thabata al-ajru inshฤ'allฤh
Translation:
"The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills."
Source: Narrated by Abu Dawud, 2357 โ graded as hasan by many scholars including al-Albani
This shorter dua is considered stronger in terms of chain of narration. Many scholars consider it the preferred iftar dua.

Allah ๏ทป says in a hadith qudsi: "Every deed of the son of Adam is for himself, except fasting โ it is for Me, and I shall reward for it." (Narrated by Bukhari, 1904; Muslim, 1151)

The dua for beginning a fast (niyyah) is: 'Wa bisawmi ghadin nawaitu min shahri Ramadan' โ 'I intend to fast tomorrow for the month of Ramadan.' For breaking the fast, the Prophet ๏ทบ recited: 'Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika amantu wa alayka tawakkaltu wa ala rizqika aftartu.'
Is the niyyah (intention) for fasting said out loud?
No. The niyyah (intention) for fasting is made in the heart โ it does not need to be said out loud. The verbal formulas exist as a help for beginners or those who find it useful. What matters is that you are aware you are fasting for Allah. Most scholars hold that the intention must be made before Fajr for each day of Ramadan.
What dua is recited at suhoor time?
There is no specific prescribed dua for suhoor (pre-dawn meal). You should eat with the intention of fasting. You can make general supplications during this blessed time.
