These are the duas recited before and during exams. Start with these — memorize them, recite them with sincerity, and then put in the work.
The Main Dua for Exam (From the Quran)
Arabic:
رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
Transliteration:
Rabbi zidnī ʿilmā
Translation:
"My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
Source: Surah Ta-Ha, 20:114
This is Allah's own words in the Quran, presented as a supplication. Allah ﷻ instructs the Prophet ﷺ to say this. There is no more authentic or powerful dua for knowledge and exam success than this one.
Dua for Relief from Difficulty Before an Exam
Arabic:
اللَّهُمَّ لَا سَهْلَ إِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلًا وَأَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزْنَ إِذَا شِئْتَ سَهْلًا
Transliteration:
Allāhumma lā sahla illā mā jaʿaltahu sahlā, wa anta tajʿalul-ḥazna idhā shi'ta sahlā
Translation:
"O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy, and You make the difficult easy when You will."
Source: Narrated by Ibn Hibban, 974 — classified as sahih
Recite this when you feel overwhelmed or anxious before the exam. It is a recognition that ease comes only from Allah ﷻ.
Dua for Opening of the Chest (When Your Mind Feels Blocked)
Arabic:
رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي
Transliteration:
Rabbi ashraḥ lī ṣadrī wa yassir lī amrī waḥlul ʿuqdatan min lisānī yafqahū qawlī
Translation:
"My Lord, expand for me my chest [with assurance] and ease for me my task and untie the knot from my tongue that they may understand my speech."
Source: Surah Ta-Ha, 20:25-28 — this is the dua of Prophet Musa (Moses) ﷺ when he was given his mission.
Recite this when you feel your thoughts are scattered or you cannot recall what you studied. It is also powerful to recite before an oral exam or presentation.

- Pray two rakats of voluntary prayer (nafl)

During the exam if you blank out:
- Silently recite Rabbi ashraḥ lī ṣadrī in your heart
- Do not panic — take a breath and move to another question, then return
No specific number of repetitions is prescribed for these duas. Recite with sincerity and focus on meaning, not on counting.
Virtues and Rewards
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim." (Narrated by Ibn Majah, 224 — graded as sahih by al-Albani)
Studying for an exam with the intention of using that knowledge to benefit yourself, your family, or your community is an act of worship (ibadah). Every hour you spend studying with this intention earns reward with Allah.
The dua Rabbi zidni ilma is unique among duas in that it is asking for more — not just success in an exam, but an increase in knowledge as a lifelong state. Scholars recommend making it a daily habit, not just an exam day ritual.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua for exam in Islam?
The most commonly recited dua before an exam is: "Rabbi zidni ilma" (رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا) — "My Lord, increase me in knowledge" (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:114). Muslims also recite the dua for relief from difficulty: "Allahumma la sahla illa ma jaaltahu sahla" before exams.
Is there a specific dua from the Quran for exams?
Yes. Surah Ta-Ha, 20:114 contains the supplication: "Rabbi zidni ilma" — "My Lord, increase me in knowledge." This is directly from the Quran and is the most authentic dua for seeking knowledge and success in studies.
Should I make wudu before reciting a dua for exam?
Wudu is not required for general dua, but it is recommended (mustahab) as it shows respect to Allah when making supplication. You can recite duas for exams without wudu, but being in a state of purity is better.
