Exams bring a particular kind of pressure โ and turning to Allah (SWT) in that pressure is exactly what a Muslim is supposed to do. There are specific duas from the Quran and Sunnah that address the very things an exam demands: clarity of mind, ease of difficulty, and the ability to express what you know. Here they are, with their full Arabic text, transliteration, and sources.
The Duas for Examination
1. The Dua of Prophet Musa โ For Clarity and Ease
This is one of the most powerful supplications in the Quran for anyone facing a demanding situation. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the scholars who came after him regularly drew on the duas of the earlier prophets. The dua of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) when he was sent to Pharaoh โ arguably the most difficult public speaking situation imaginable โ is directly applicable before any exam.
Transliteration:
Rabbi ishrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlul 'uqdatan min lisani, yafqahu qawli
Translation:
"My Lord, expand for me my chest, and ease for me my affair, and untie the knot from my tongue, that they may understand my speech."
Source: Surah Ta-Ha, 20:25-28
What Musa (peace be upon him) asked for maps directly onto what you need in an exam: an open chest (mental clarity, absence of anxiety), ease in the matter (smooth recall, clear thinking), and eloquence (the ability to express what you know). He was asking Allah to make his knowledge accessible โ and that is precisely what you need.
2. The Dua for Increasing Knowledge
This is the shortest and most direct Quranic supplication for knowledge. Allah ๏ทป commanded the Prophet ๏ทบ to say it, making it uniquely significant โ it is a dua that was revealed as divine instruction.
Arabic:
ุฑููุจูู ุฒูุฏูููู ุนูููู ูุง
Transliteration:
Rabbi zidni 'ilma
Translation:
"My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
Source: Surah Ta-Ha, 20:114
Three words. This is the entire dua, and its brevity is part of what makes it so powerful. Scholars note that in the Quran, Allah commands the Prophet ๏ทบ to ask for more of many things โ more provision, more guidance โ but the explicit command to ask for more knowledge is unique to this verse. Recite it throughout your study sessions, not just on the day of the exam.
3. The Dua for Removing Difficulty
This supplication asks Allah to transform what is hard into what is easy. It is the dua to go to when the subject feels impossible, when your mind is blank, or when anxiety is threatening to overtake your preparation. The dua for anxiety collection covers these moments in depth.
Transliteration:
Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahla, wa anta taj'alus-sa'ba idha shi'ta sahla
Translation:
"O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy, and You make the difficult easy when You will."
Source: Narrated by Ibn Hibban, 974; Ibn al-Sunni, 351
This dua is a direct theological statement: ease is not the default state of the world โ it is a gift from Allah. When you recite it before your exam, you are acknowledging that no amount of studying alone guarantees success, and that the only One who can truly smooth the path is Allah ๏ทป.

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the next. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth.
Abu Dawud 4:316, Ibn Majah 2:332
When to Recite These Duas
During your study sessions is the first answer. "Rabbi zidni 'ilma" is designed to be said as you learn โ it is a request for more knowledge in the moment of acquiring it. Reciting it at the start of each study session reconnects your studying to its true purpose: seeking knowledge for the sake of Allah.
Before you enter the exam room, recite the dua of Musa (peace be upon him) โ Rabbi ishrah li sadri โ and the dua for removing difficulty. You can say them quietly as you walk in or sit down. If you are waiting for the exam to begin, these are the words to have on your lips.
During the exam itself, if you hit a question you cannot answer, lower your gaze for a moment and say "Rabbi ishrah li sadri" quietly. This is not superstition โ it is re-anchoring your reliance on Allah rather than spiralling into panic. Many students find it genuinely settles the mind.
In sujud (prostration) during your regular prayers is one of the best times to make any personal dua. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is in prostration, so increase your duas." (Narrated by Muslim, 482.) Before your exam, add these supplications to your sujud in Fajr and any prayers you pray that day.
Virtues and Benefits
Seeking knowledge is not just a practical necessity in Islam โ it is an act of worship with enormous reward attached to it.
Yarfa'illahul-ladhina amanu minkum wal-ladhina utul-'ilma darajat
"Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees."
Source: Surah Al-Mujadila, 58:11
When you make dua before an exam, you are not just asking for a grade. You are recognising that the knowledge you are working to acquire has a status with Allah, and that His assistance in the process is something worth asking for explicitly.
The Prophet ๏ทบ also told us: "Whoever takes a path in pursuit of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise." (Narrated by Muslim, 2699.) The exam is part of that path. Treating it as an act of worship โ preparing diligently, making sincere dua, and leaving the result to Allah โ transforms something stressful into something spiritually meaningful.
Tawakkul: Trust in Allah After Preparation
Tawakkul does not mean leaving things to Allah without doing your part. This is a common misunderstanding. The Prophet ๏ทบ was asked about a man who left his camel untied, trusting in Allah. He replied: "Tie your camel, then put your trust in Allah." (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2517. Graded hasan.)
Your studying is tying the camel. The dua is tawakkul. Both are required.
Specifically for students: study to the best of your ability, prepare your materials, get adequate sleep before the exam, and then make your dua with full sincerity. After you have done all of that, release the outcome. Your job ends at the door of the exam hall. What happens inside is in Allah's hands, and His decree โ whatever it is โ is better for you than what your own limited sight could plan.
If the result is not what you hoped for, that too is part of Allah's wisdom. A grade is not your final station. It is one point on a much longer road.
Tips for Memorization
All three duas in this article are short enough to memorize within a day.
"Rabbi zidni 'ilma" is three words โ you already know it after reading it once. Write it on a sticky note at your desk.
"Allahumma la sahla..." has two halves with a natural internal logic: nothing is easy except what You make easy โ pause โ and You make the hard easy when You will. Learn the first clause, then the second. They mirror each other.
"Rabbi ishrah li sadri..." is the longest of the three but has a clear structure: expand my chest โ ease my affair โ untie my tongue โ so they understand me. Each request builds on the previous one. Memorize it line by line over two or three days of repetition.
Reading the Arabic alongside the translation โ rather than just the transliteration โ also accelerates memorization. When you understand what each word means, the Arabic stops being arbitrary sounds and starts having weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua for before an exam?
The most commonly recited dua before an exam is "Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahla, wa anta taj'alus-sa'ba idha shi'ta sahla" โ O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy, and You make the difficult easy if You will. This is reported by Ibn Hibban (974) and Ibn al-Sunni (351).
Is there a specific Quranic dua for exams?
Yes. "Rabbi zidni ilma" โ My Lord, increase me in knowledge โ is directly from the Quran (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:114). It is the most concise Quranic supplication for knowledge and is entirely appropriate before any exam or study session.
Can I recite the dua of Prophet Musa for exams?
Yes. The dua of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) asking Allah for clarity, ease, and the ability to be understood โ "Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri..." (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:25-28) โ is highly relevant for exams. It asks for an open chest, ease in affairs, and eloquence in speech.
Does dua replace studying for an exam?
No. Dua is an act of worship and a means of seeking Allah's help, but it does not substitute for preparation. The Islamic principle of tawakkul (trust in Allah) means you do your part fully and then leave the outcome to Allah. Relying on dua without studying is not tawakkul โ it is negligence.
When should I recite dua for an exam?
Recite the dua during your study sessions, before you enter the exam room, and at the moment you sit down to begin. Some scholars also recommend making dua during sujud (prostration) in your prayers, as that is one of the closest positions to Allah.
