The dua for leaving the house is a short Sunnah supplication taught by the Prophet ๏ทบ. It takes only seconds to say, yet it carries a profound promise: the one who recites it is guided, protected, and shielded from Shaytan for the rest of their time outside.

What the Prophet ๏ทบ Said About This Dua

The hadith does not simply describe the words โ€” it describes what happens the moment they are said. Anas ibn Malik ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ narrated that the Prophet ๏ทบ said:

"When a man goes out of his house and says: 'Bismillah, tawakkaltu alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah', it will be said to him: 'You have been guided, you have been sufficed, and you have been protected.' The devils will go far from him, and another devil will say to him: 'How can you deal with a man who has been guided, sufficed, and protected?'" โ€” Abu Dawud 5095

Three things are granted to the person who says this dua:

  1. Guidance (hudita) โ€” Allah directs them on the right path
  2. Sufficiency (kufita) โ€” Allah takes care of their needs
  3. Protection (wuqita) โ€” Allah shields them from harm

Shaytan does not merely step back โ€” he is described as running to another devil and acknowledging that there is nothing he can do against someone Allah has guided, sufficed, and protected.

Word-by-Word Meaning

Understanding the meaning deepens the impact of the dua:

  • Bismillah โ€” "In the name of Allah." Beginning any action with Allah's name is a Sunnah. It consecrates the act and invites Allah's barakah.
  • Tawakkaltu alallah โ€” "I place my trust in Allah." Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) is one of the highest stations in Islam. Saying it at the door is an affirmation that your protection, provision, and outcome all belong to Allah โ€” not to your own ability or precaution.
  • Wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah โ€” "And there is no power or might except with Allah." Known as the hawqala, this phrase is described in hadith as a treasure from the treasures of Jannah. It strips away any illusion that you are self-sufficient, returning all power to its rightful source.

When and How to Recite

Recite this dua at the moment you step out โ€” before fully leaving the threshold. It is connected to the act of departing, not to a specific time of day. Whether you are leaving for work in the morning, running an errand in the afternoon, or heading out at night, the dua applies every time.

There is no requirement to raise your hands or face a specific direction. Simply pause at the door, say the dua quietly or aloud, and step out. The sequence takes less than ten seconds.

Pair It With the Dua for Entering the Home

When you return, there is a separate Sunnah dua for entering the home:

Transliteration:

Bismillฤhi walajnฤ, wa bismillฤhi kharajnฤ, wa สฟalฤ Rabbinฤ tawakkalnฤ

Translation:

"In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we rely."

Source: Abu Dawud 5096

Together, these two duas frame every departure and return with the remembrance of Allah. Your home becomes a place entered and left under Allah's name โ€” a small but consistent act of worship woven into the fabric of daily life.

Why This Dua Matters

Muslims are instructed to begin all significant actions with Bismillah โ€” eating, drinking, entering the home, and leaving it. The dua for leaving the house goes further: it combines Bismillah with an explicit declaration of tawakkul and an acknowledgement that all power belongs to Allah alone.

In a world full of distractions, anxieties, and dangers both seen and unseen, this dua is a daily reset. It reminds you before you face the day that you are not alone, that your affairs are in Allah's hands, and that Shaytan has no hold over someone who steps out with the name of Allah on their lips.

Making this dua a habit also protects your children. When they see you pause at the door every morning, they learn that leaving the house is not a thoughtless act โ€” it is a conscious step taken under Allah's care.
