The dua for entering home is a short Sunnah supplication that invites Allah's blessing and protection into your household every time you cross the threshold.

The Dua for Entering Home

Transliteration:

Bismillฤhi walajnฤ, wa bismillฤhi kharajnฤ, wa สฟalฤ Rabbinฤ tawakkalnฤ

Translation:

"In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we rely."

Source: Abu Dawud 5096

This single supplication covers both entering and leaving โ€” it is a complete expression of tawakkul (reliance on Allah) tied to one of the most repeated acts of daily life.

Also Say Salam When You Enter

Beyond the dua, the Prophet ๏ทบ instructed believers to greet with Salam upon entering the home. Allah says in the Quran:

"When you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good." โ€” Surah An-Nur (24:61)

This applies even when no one is home. The angels respond to the Salam, and the greeting fills the home with barakah. Say:

Transliteration:

As-salฤmu สฟalaynฤ wa สฟalฤ สฟibฤdillฤhis-แนฃฤliแธฅฤซn

Translation:

"Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah."

When and How to Recite

Recite the dua as you step through the door โ€” before entering fully. The Prophet ๏ทบ also taught that mentioning the name of Allah upon entering the home prevents Shaytan from settling there for the night:

"When a man enters his house and mentions Allah upon entering and before eating, Shaytan says: 'There is no place to spend the night and no dinner for you here.' If he enters without mentioning Allah, Shaytan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night.' If he does not mention Allah before eating, Shaytan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night and dinner.'" โ€” Muslim 2018

The sequence is simple:

  1. Pause at the door and recite Bismillahi walajnaa...
  2. Enter with your right foot first (Sunnah)
  3. Say Assalamu Alaykum as a greeting to whoever is inside โ€” or to the angels if the house is empty

Virtues and Rewards

Reciting this dua at the door is more than a ritual โ€” it is a declaration that your home is under Allah's name and protection. A household that begins and ends every entry with Bismillah is a household grounded in the remembrance of Allah.

The Hadith from Muslim 2018 (above) makes clear that Shaytan is blocked from the home when Allah's name is mentioned. This is not metaphorical โ€” it is a direct cause-and-effect relationship established by the Prophet ๏ทบ. Shaytan actively looks for homes where Allah is not remembered; the dua for entering the home closes that door.

Making this dua habitual also trains children and family members in daily dhikr. When the dua is said aloud at the entrance, it becomes part of the home's rhythm โ€” a constant renewal of the covenant with Allah at the place where your family lives, rests, and grows.

The Dua for Leaving Home

When you leave, there is a separate Sunnah dua:

Transliteration:

Bismillฤh, tawakkaltu สฟalallฤh, wa lฤ แธฅawla wa lฤ quwwata illฤ billฤh

Translation:

"In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might or power except with Allah."

Source: Abu Dawud 5095, Tirmidhi 3426

When this dua is recited upon leaving, an angel says: "You are guided, protected, and guarded." Shaytan turns away from such a person, saying he cannot harm someone who has been directed, protected, and saved.

Should you say Salam when entering your own home?

Yes. Allah commands in the Quran (24:61): 'When you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good.' The Prophet ๏ทบ encouraged saying Assalamu Alaykum when entering the home, even if no one is inside, as the angels respond to the greeting.

What should you say when leaving your home?

When leaving home, recite: 'Bismillah, tawakkaltu alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' โ€” 'In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might or power except with Allah.' This is narrated in Abu Dawud (5095) and Tirmidhi (3426).

What are the benefits of reciting the dua when entering home?

Reciting the dua when entering the home invites barakah (blessing) into the household, protects the family from Shaytan, and establishes the remembrance of Allah at the threshold. The Prophet ๏ทบ linked the mention of Allah's name at entry with Shaytan being unable to spend the night in that home.
