Here are the duas to recite on exam day โ organized by when to say them, from the night before to the moment you sit down and begin.
The Duas
1. Dua for Knowledge and Clarity

Transliteration:
Rabbi zidnฤซ สฟilmฤ
Translation:
"My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
Source: Surah Ta-Ha, 20:114
This is a Quranic supplication โ Allah ๏ทป Himself teaches it to the Prophet ๏ทบ. There is no more foundational dua for a student. Recite it before you study, before you sleep, and again on the morning of your exam.
2. Dua for Ease and Openness of the Chest

Transliteration:
Rabbish-raแธฅ lฤซ แนฃadrฤซ wa yassir lฤซ amrฤซ
Translation:
"My Lord, expand for me my chest and ease my task for me."
Source: Surah Ta-Ha, 20:25-26 โ the dua of Prophet Musa ๏ทบ before his greatest test
This is the dua to recite right outside the exam hall. It asks Allah to open your mind, reduce anxiety, and make the task feel manageable. Musa ๏ทบ made this dua before facing Pharaoh โ you can make it before an exam paper.
3. Dua for Anxiety and Overwhelm
Arabic:
ุญูุณูุจูููุง ุงูููููู ููููุนูู ู ุงููููููููู
Transliteration:
แธคasbunallฤhu wa niสฟmal-wakฤซl
Translation:
"Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs."
Source: Surah Al-Imran, 3:173 โ recited by the companions when faced with a great threat
When nerves spike and you feel overwhelmed โ in the exam room, staring at a hard question โ this is your anchor. It is not resignation; it is the deepest form of trust.

Exam Day Routine: When to Recite Each Dua
The Night Before
- Pray Isha โ do not delay it; start your night on worship.
- Pray two rakats of nafl (voluntary prayer) with the intention of asking Allah for help in your exam.
- Recite Rabbi zidni ilma after salah, with full attention on its meaning.
- Make personal dua in your own words: ask Allah to help you recall what you studied, to calm your nerves, and to grant you ease tomorrow.
- Sleep at a reasonable hour. Rest is part of preparation.
Morning of the Exam
- Pray Fajr on time โ this is non-negotiable. Fajr is prayed at one of the most blessed times of day, and skipping it for "extra sleep" before an exam is a poor trade.
- After Fajr, recite Rabbi zidni ilma three times.
- Eat something โ neglecting your body is not tawakkul.
- Leave with enough time. Rushing to an exam is its own form of anxiety.
Arriving at the Exam Venue
- As you approach the building or room, recite Rabbish-rahli sadri wa yassir li amri quietly to yourself.
- Say Bismillah as you enter.
- Before you look at the paper, take one breath and say Bismillah again.
During the Exam
- If you encounter a question you cannot answer, silently recite Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil in your heart.
- Move on to easier questions first, then return. This is both good strategy and a practical act of trust in Allah.
- Do not forget that the knowledge you are drawing on is ultimately from Him.
Tawakkul: Dua Is Not a Substitute for Studying
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Tie your camel, then put your trust in Allah." (Tirmidhi, 2517)
Dua is most powerful when it accompanies sincere effort. Asking Allah to help you recall what you studied is a complete act. Asking Allah to fill in knowledge you never sought is asking without the precondition. Do both: study with full effort, then hand the outcome to Allah.
This is tawakkul โ not passivity, but active reliance after doing your part.

Asbahna wa asbahal-mulku lillah, walhamdu lillah, la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul-mulku walahul-hamd, wahuwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadeer
We have reached the morning and at this very time all sovereignty belongs to Allah. All praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things omnipotent.
Abu Dawud 4:317

Allahumma bika asbahna, wa bika amsayna, wa bika nahya, wa bika namootu, wa ilaykan-nushoor
O Allah, by Your leave we have reached the morning and by Your leave we have reached the evening, by Your leave we live and die, and unto You is our resurrection.
At-Tirmidhi 5:466

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyah fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyah fi deeni wa dunyaya wa ahli wa maali
O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the next. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth.
Abu Dawud 4:316, Ibn Majah 2:332
Virtues and Rewards
Seeking knowledge is an obligation in Islam:
"Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim." (Ibn Majah, 224 โ graded sahih by al-Albani)
When you study for an exam with the intention of benefiting yourself, your family, and your community, every hour you invest becomes an act of worship. The dua Rabbi zidni ilma is unique in that it asks for a perpetual increase โ not just exam success, but a lifelong expansion of understanding. Scholars recommend making it a daily habit long after any particular exam is finished.

Frequently Asked Questions
What dua should I read right before entering an exam hall?
Right before entering, recite Rabbish-rahli sadri wa yassir li amri (ุฑูุจูู ุงุดูุฑูุญู ููู ุตูุฏูุฑูู ููููุณููุฑู ููู ุฃูู ูุฑูู) โ the dua of Musa ๏ทบ for ease and clarity of mind. Then say Bismillah as you step in and begin. This combination covers both mental clarity and seeking Allah's blessing at the point of entry.
How many times should I recite dua for an exam?
There is no prescribed number for these duas. Recite with focus on the meaning rather than counting. Some scholars suggest reciting "Rabbi zidni ilma" three times for emphasis, but sincerity and presence of heart matter far more than repetition.
Can I make dua for an exam without wudu?
Yes, dua can be made at any time and in any state. However, being in a state of wudu (ablution) is recommended as it shows reverence to Allah ๏ทป when supplicating. If possible, make wudu before your exam day duas.
Is it haram to rely only on dua without studying for an exam?
Relying solely on dua while neglecting study goes against the Islamic concept of tawakkul. True tawakkul means doing your part (studying) and then placing your trust in Allah for the result. The Prophet ๏ทบ taught us to "tie your camel, then put your trust in Allah" (Tirmidhi, 2517).
What is the best dua if my mind goes blank during an exam?
If your mind goes blank, silently recite "Rabbish-rahli sadri wa yassir li amri" (My Lord, open my chest and ease my matter) in your heart. Then take a slow breath, skip that question temporarily, and return to it. Panic is the enemy of recall โ this dua helps restore calm and focus.
