The Janazah is the Islamic funeral prayer โ the community's final act of love for a Muslim who has died. It is short, prayed standing, with no bowing or prostration, just four takbirs and quiet supplication asking Allah to forgive the deceased. Allah ๏ทป reminds us why it matters: "Every soul will taste death" (Surah Al-Imran, 3:185). One day others will stand in this prayer for us, so learning it is a duty worth carrying.
This guide walks you through exactly how to pray Janazah: the standing, the four takbirs, what to recite after each one, the dua for the deceased in Arabic, and the mistakes people make most.
What you'll learn:
- What the Janazah prayer is and why it is a communal obligation
- How to stand and where the imam stands
- The full step-by-step method through all four takbirs
- The dua for the deceased and the common mistakes to avoid
What Is the Janazah Prayer?
Janazah (ุฌูููุงุฒูุฉ) is the funeral prayer offered for a deceased Muslim before burial. It is unlike any other salah: there is no ruku (bowing) and no sujud (prostration). The entire prayer is performed standing, in silence, and consists of four takbirs with a short recitation or supplication after each.
Its ruling is fard kifayah โ a communal obligation. If enough Muslims pray it, the obligation is lifted from everyone; if no one does, the whole community bears the sin. The reward for attending is immense. The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Whoever attends the funeral until the prayer is offered will have one qirat of reward, and whoever attends until the burial will have two qirats." When asked what the two qirats were, he said, "Like two great mountains." โ Narrated by al-Bukhari (Sahih al-Bukhari 1325)
The number of takbirs is established from the Prophet's own practice. When the Negus (An-Najashi), the righteous king of Abyssinia, died, the Prophet ๏ทบ announced his death and led the people in prayer for him:
The Prophet ๏ทบ went out with them to the place of prayer, arranged them in rows, and said the takbir four times. โ Narrated by al-Bukhari (Sahih al-Bukhari 1245)
Before You Begin: Positions and Conditions
A few things to know before the prayer starts:
- Wudu is required, just as in any salah. Refresh it if needed with our guide on how to perform wudu.
- The deceased is placed in front, on a bier, and the worshippers form rows behind the imam facing the qiblah.
- Where the imam stands: for a male deceased, the imam stands level with the head; for a female deceased, level with the middle of the body.
- Odd rows are recommended. It is sunnah to form the congregation into three rows or more, as more rows of believers praying for the deceased is a means of mercy.
- No prayer mat movements โ you remain standing throughout. There is no sitting, bowing, or prostrating.
Make your intention in your heart to pray the Janazah for this deceased person, following the imam.
Step-by-Step: How to Pray Janazah
The prayer flows through four takbirs. You raise your hands for the first takbir; the schools differ on whether you raise them for the others (the Hanafi view is to raise only at the first). Everything is recited silently.
First takbir โ open the prayer. Raise your hands to your shoulders or ears and say:
ุงูููููู ุฃูููุจูุฑ โ Allahu Akbar โ "Allah is the Greatest."
Then place your right hand over your left and recite Surah Al-Fatiha silently. Reciting Al-Fatiha here is established practice โ Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) recited it aloud in a funeral prayer to teach that it is from the sunnah (Sahih al-Bukhari 1335).
Second takbir โ blessings on the Prophet ๏ทบ. Say Allahu Akbar, then recite the Salah Ibrahimiyyah, the same blessings you say in the tashahhud of your daily prayers:
ุงููููููู ูู ุตูููู ุนูููู ู ูุญูู ููุฏู ููุนูููู ุขูู ู ูุญูู ููุฏู
Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammad
"O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad..." (continue to the end as in your salah).
Third takbir โ dua for the deceased. Say Allahu Akbar, then make sincere supplication for the deceased. A complete dua taught by the Prophet ๏ทบ (narrated by Awf ibn Malik) is:
Allahumma-ghfir lahu warhamhu, wa afihi wa'fu anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama naqqaytath-thawbal-abyada minad-danas
"O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and pardon him, honor his reception and make his entry spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him of his sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt." โ Narrated by Muslim (Sahih Muslim 963)
If the deceased is female, change the pronoun lahu (him) to laha (her). If you do not know this dua, any sincere supplication for the deceased's forgiveness is valid.
Fourth takbir โ pause, then salam. Say Allahu Akbar a final time. Pause briefly โ many recite a short dua such as "Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la taftinna ba'dah" ("O Allah, do not deny us their reward and do not test us after them"). Then turn your head to the right and give one salam:
ุงูุณููููุงู ู ุนูููููููู ู ููุฑูุญูู ูุฉู ุงููููู โ As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah โ "Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you."
That completes the Janazah. The body is then carried for burial โ and attending the burial earns the second qirat of reward.
A Note on Praying for Children and the Order of Words
If the deceased is a child who has not reached the age of accountability, the dua changes โ instead of asking forgiveness for sins they did not have, you ask Allah to make the child a source of reward and intercession for the parents. The four takbirs and the standing format stay the same.
For a deeper look at the supplications said at and after a death, see our guide to the dua for the deceased.
Standing in a funeral prayer is also a reminder to guard our own salah while we still can โ the five daily prayers are the first thing we will be asked about. Use the tool below to check your accurate local prayer times and never miss them.

The four schools agree on the four takbirs and the standing format, but differ on small details.
| Aspect | Hanafi | Shafi'i | Maliki | Hanbali |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raising hands | First takbir only | All four takbirs | First takbir only | All four takbirs |
| Surah Al-Fatiha | Not recited (thana instead) | Recited (a pillar) | Recommended | Recited |
| Number of takbirs | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| Recitation | Silent | Silent | Silent | Silent |
The differences are in the details, not the structure. Follow the practice of the imam leading the prayer and your local community.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Bowing or prostrating. There is no ruku or sujud in Janazah. The entire prayer is standing. Adding them invalidates it.
- Reciting aloud. All four schools pray Janazah silently. The imam says only the takbirs and the final salam audibly.
- Leaving before the salam. Wait for the imam's final takbir and salam. Stepping away early means you have not completed the prayer.
- Skipping the dua for the deceased. The third takbir's supplication is the heart of the prayer โ its entire purpose is to ask Allah's mercy for the one who has died. Do not rush past it.
- Thinking you missed it if you join late. If you join after a takbir, follow the imam from where you are, and complete any missed takbirs after he gives salam, before the body is lifted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can women pray Janazah? Yes. Women may pray the Janazah prayer, in congregation or individually. The communal obligation is fulfilled by whoever prays it. Historically women prayed the funeral prayer in the mosque of the Prophet ๏ทบ.
What if I don't know the Arabic duas? Recite what you can. Surah Al-Fatiha is short and known to most. For the dua of the deceased, any sincere supplication asking Allah to forgive them is acceptable if you have not memorized the prophetic wording. Learning the established dua over time is encouraged.
Can Janazah be prayed in absence (ghaib)? Yes, the funeral prayer in absentia (Salat al-Ghaib) is valid according to many scholars, based on the Prophet ๏ทบ praying for the Negus who died far away in Abyssinia (Sahih al-Bukhari 1245). It is prayed the same way, with the deceased not physically present.
Summary

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you pray Janazah prayer step by step?
Janazah is prayed standing, with four takbirs and no bowing or prostration. After the first takbir recite Surah Al-Fatiha, after the second send blessings on the Prophet, after the third make dua for the deceased, and after the fourth pause briefly then give one salam. The whole prayer is offered silently while standing.
How many takbirs are in Janazah prayer?
Janazah prayer has four takbirs (saying Allahu Akbar four times). The Prophet prayed the funeral prayer for the Negus with four takbirs, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari. The first takbir opens the prayer, and each of the next three introduces a recitation or supplication, ending with the salam.
Is Janazah prayer fard?
Janazah prayer is fard kifayah โ a communal obligation. If a sufficient number of Muslims pray it, the duty is fulfilled for everyone; if no one prays it, the whole community is sinful. Attending and praying it carries great reward, described by the Prophet as earning qirat, mountains of reward.
What dua do you read in Janazah prayer?
After the third takbir you make dua for the deceased. A well-known supplication taught by the Prophet begins 'Allahumma ighfir lahu warhamhu' โ 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him.' It asks Allah to pardon the deceased, cleanse them of sin, and admit them into Paradise, as narrated in Sahih Muslim.
