How to pray Eid salah โ€” step-by-step guide to the Eid prayer

Eid morning has a rhythm all its own: the ghusl, the new clothes, the sweet dates before Eid al-Fitr, and above all the takbirs ringing out on the way to the prayer ground. The Eid prayer sits at the center of the day. It looks a little different from the five daily prayers โ€” no adhan, extra takbirs, and a khutbah that comes after instead of before โ€” which is exactly why so many people feel unsure the moment the imam starts.

The good news: Eid salah is only two rakahs, and once you know where the extra takbirs go, you can follow along with confidence. Allah (SWT) tied the prayer to the day of sacrifice itself: "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice" (Surah Al-Kawthar, 108:2).

What you'll learn:

  • When Eid prayer starts and ends, and what to do before you go
  • The full two-rakah method, step by step, with the extra takbirs
  • The takbir of Eid to recite on the way
  • How the four madhabs differ on the number of takbirs

What Is Eid Salah and Is It Obligatory?

Eid salah is the special congregational prayer offered on the mornings of the two Eids: Eid al-Fitr (marking the end of Ramadan) and Eid al-Adha (during the days of Hajj). It is prayed once, in the early morning, and is always performed in congregation โ€” ideally at an open Eid ground (musalla) or a large masjid.

Scholars differ on its exact ruling, but all agree it is heavily emphasized:

  • Hanafi: wajib (obligatory) on those who must pray Jumu'ah.
  • Hanbali: fard kifayah (a communal obligation).
  • Shafi'i and Maliki: sunnah mu'akkadah (a strongly confirmed sunnah).

Whichever view you follow, the Prophet ๏ทบ never left it, and he even instructed the women โ€” including those who were menstruating โ€” to come out and be present for the good and the gathering. It is a prayer you should make every effort to attend.

Before You Go: The Sunnahs of Eid Morning

A few things to do before you reach the prayer ground:

  • Perform ghusl. A full ritual bath before Eid prayer is a confirmed sunnah. If you're unsure of the method, see our guide on how to perform ghusl, and make sure your wudu is valid too.
  • Wear your best clean clothes and apply perfume (for men).
  • Eat an odd number of dates before Eid al-Fitr โ€” but eat nothing before Eid al-Adha prayer, saving your first food for the sacrifice.
  • Recite the takbir on the way to the prayer (see below).
  • Go by one route and return by another, following the Prophet's ๏ทบ practice.

There is no adhan and no iqamah for Eid prayer. When the imam stands, you simply begin.

The Takbir of Eid

From the night before Eid (and, for Eid al-Adha, through the days of Tashreeq), Muslims recite the takbir aloud. The wording reported from the companions such as Ibn Mas'ud is:

"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah; Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise."

Keep it on your tongue on the way to the prayer. It is one of the clearest signs of the day.

What Time Is Eid Prayer?

Eid prayer has a specific window:

  • Starts: shortly after sunrise, once the sun has risen roughly the height of a spear above the horizon โ€” about 15 to 20 minutes after sunrise.
  • Ends: just before zawal (when the sun reaches its highest point, right before Dhuhr).

So it is a morning prayer, never before sunrise and never after midday. Most masjids run several Eid jama'ahs across the morning โ€” check your accurate prayer times so you know exactly when sunrise falls in your city.

Step-by-Step: How to Pray Eid Salah

Eid salah is two rakahs. The extra takbirs are the only real addition โ€” everything else follows a normal prayer. This is the widely-followed method of seven and five takbirs; the Hanafi count is covered in the table below.

The First Rakah

  1. Make your intention (niyyah) in your heart to pray the two rakahs of Eid behind the imam.

  2. Opening takbir (takbirat al-ihram). Raise your hands and say Allahu akbar to begin, then place your hands as usual and recite the opening supplication (du'a al-istiftah) quietly.

  3. The extra takbirs. Now say seven takbirs in total, raising your hands with each and dropping them to your sides between them. It is sunnah to say quietly between each: SubhanAllah, wal-hamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illa Allah, wallahu akbar.

  4. Recitation. The imam recites Surah al-Fatihah aloud, followed by a surah โ€” commonly Surah al-A'la or Surah Qaf.

  5. Complete the rakah as normal: ruku', then two sujud, exactly like any prayer.

The Second Rakah

  1. Stand for the second rakah. After rising, and before reciting, say five extra takbirs, again raising your hands with each.

  2. Recitation. The imam recites al-Fatihah and a second surah โ€” often Surah al-Ghashiyah or Surah al-Qamar.

  3. Complete the prayer with ruku', two sujud, the final tashahhud, and the two salams to end.

The count of seven and five (apart from the takbirs of the prayer itself) comes from the report of Aishah: "The takbir of al-Fitr and al-Adha is seven in the first rakah and five in the second" (Abu Dawud 1149, graded sahih). If you lose count behind the imam, just follow him โ€” the extra takbirs are not a condition that invalidates the prayer if a number is missed.

After the Prayer: The Khutbah

Unlike Jumu'ah, the Eid khutbah comes after the prayer. Jabir ibn Abdullah reported that the Prophet ๏ทบ "came out on the day of Eid al-Fitr and started with the prayer before the khutbah" (Sahih al-Bukhari 958). Stay seated and listen โ€” the khutbah is part of the sunnah of the day, though listening to it is not obligatory.

Search your city or use your location

Knowing your local sunrise time above is the key to catching Eid prayer in its window โ€” and to never missing your five daily prayers either.

How the Four Madhabs Differ on the Takbirs

All four schools add extra takbirs; they differ on the number and placement. None is "wrong" โ€” each rests on authentic evidence.

MadhabFirst rak'ahSecond rak'ahBasis
Hanafi3 extra takbirs (before al-Fatihah)3 extra takbirs (after the surah, before ruku')Report of Ibn Mas'ud
Maliki7 total (including the opening takbir)6 total (including the standing takbir)Practice of Madinah
Shafi'i7 extra takbirs (after the opening)5 extra takbirsHadith of Aishah
Hanbali6 extra takbirs (after the opening)5 extra takbirsHadith of Aishah

The simplest rule for a worshipper: follow your imam. Whatever count he uses, raise your hands and say the takbir with him.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Praying an adhan or iqamah for Eid. There is none. The prayer begins straight away.
  • Leaving before the khutbah. The prayer is finished with the salam, but staying for the khutbah is the sunnah โ€” don't rush off.
  • Fasting on Eid. It is forbidden to fast on either day of Eid. Break your fast before Eid al-Fitr prayer with dates.
  • Praying it after midday. The window closes at zawal. If you miss it, pray it before then; after that, its time is gone for that year.
  • Adding a raised-hands qunoot or extra units. Eid is only two rakahs. Anything beyond the takbirs described is not part of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do women pray Eid salah? Yes. The Prophet ๏ทบ instructed women to attend the Eid prayer and gathering. A woman who is menstruating attends the gathering and takbirs but does not pray the salah itself.

Is there a sunnah prayer before or after Eid salah? There is no sunnah prayer connected to Eid salah at the prayer ground before or after it. If Eid is prayed in a masjid, the usual ruling on greeting the masjid still applies.

What surahs did the Prophet ๏ทบ recite in Eid prayer? He would recite Surah al-A'la (87) in the first rakah and Surah al-Ghashiyah (88) in the second, or Surah Qaf (50) and Surah al-Qamar (54). Any surah is valid; these are the sunnah choices.

Summary

Eid salah is two rakahs of celebration and gratitude โ€” simple once the takbirs make sense:

  • Pray it in congregation after sunrise, before midday, with no adhan or iqamah.
  • Add the extra takbirs (seven and five in the majority view; three and three for Hanafis).
  • The khutbah comes after the prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 958).
  • Come with ghusl, best clothes, and the takbir on your lips.

Follow your imam, keep it to the two rakahs, and enjoy the day Allah gave you to celebrate. And Allah knows best (ูˆุงู„ู„ู‡ ุฃุนู„ู…).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rakahs is Eid salah?

Eid salah is two rakahs, prayed once on the morning of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. What makes it different from a normal prayer is the set of extra takbirs added in each rakah before the recitation. There is no adhan and no iqamah, and the khutbah comes after the prayer, not before.

What time is Eid prayer?

Eid prayer begins shortly after sunrise, once the sun has risen about the height of a spear (roughly 15 to 20 minutes after sunrise), and its time lasts until just before Dhuhr (zawal, when the sun reaches its peak). It cannot be prayed before sunrise or after midday, so pray it in the morning.

How many takbirs are in Eid prayer?

In the strongest reported practice, the Prophet said seven takbirs in the first rakah and five in the second, before the Quran recitation, apart from the normal takbirs of the prayer (Abu Dawud 1149). The Hanafi school follows a different count of three and three. Both are valid within their schools.

Can I pray Eid salah at home if I miss it?

Yes. If you miss the congregational Eid prayer, the majority of scholars say you may pray the two rakahs on your own at home, with the extra takbirs, up until midday. You do not give a khutbah when praying alone. Praying it in congregation at the masjid or Eid ground is far better where possible.
