Every prayer a Muslim offers begins long before the first Allahu Akbar โ it begins at the tap. Wudu, the ritual washing, is the key that unlocks salah: without it, the prayer is not accepted. The good news is that wudu takes about a minute once you know the order, and the method has been preserved exactly as the Prophet ๏ทบ taught it.
Wudu has four obligatory actions named directly in the Quran: washing the face, washing the arms to the elbows, wiping the head, and washing the feet to the ankles (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:6). Everything else โ washing the hands first, rinsing the mouth and nose, repeating each wash three times โ is the Sunnah that completes and perfects your wudu.
What you'll learn:
- The four obligatory (fard) acts versus the recommended (sunnah) acts
- The full step-by-step method, in order, with what to say
- How the four madhabs differ on the details
- The most common mistakes and how to avoid them
What Is Wudu and Why Does It Matter?
Wudu (ููุถููุก) is the ablution a Muslim performs to enter a state of ritual purity. It is required before the five daily prayers, before touching the Arabic text of the Quran, and before tawaf around the Kaaba.
Allah (SWT) commands it directly:
Ya ayyuha alladhina amanu idha qumtum ila as-salati fa-ghsilu wujuhakum wa aydiyakum ila al-marafiqi wa-msahu bi-ru'usikum wa arjulakum ila al-ka'bayn
"O you who believe! When you rise to pray, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads, and [wash] your feet up to the ankles." โ Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:6
Beyond purity, wudu wipes away small sins. The Prophet ๏ทบ taught that when a person makes wudu well, their minor sins leave their body with the water, even from under their fingernails (Sahih al-Bukhari 164). It is worship in itself, not just preparation for worship.
Before You Begin
A few things to check first:
- Use clean, pure water. Plain water from a tap, well, river, or rain all work. Water mixed with something that changes its nature (like juice or tea) does not.
- Remove waterproof barriers. Nail polish, paint, or anything that stops water reaching the skin must come off first. Henna stains are fine โ they leave no barrier.
- Make your intention (niyyah). This is in the heart: simply intend to perform wudu for the sake of Allah. You do not say it aloud.
Step-by-Step: How to Perform Wudu
Follow these steps in order. The four obligatory acts are marked (fard); the rest are Sunnah that the Prophet ๏ทบ consistently performed.
Begin with the name of Allah. Say:
ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููููู โ Bismillah โ "In the name of Allah."
Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, starting with the right, working water between the fingers.
Rinse the mouth (madmadah) three times, swilling the water around.
Rinse the nose (istinshaq) three times โ gently draw water in with the right hand and blow it out with the left.
Wash the entire face (fard) three times, from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear.
Wash the arms to the elbows (fard) three times โ the right arm first, then the left. Make sure water flows over the elbow itself.
Wipe the head (fard) once: wet your hands and pass them from the front of the head to the back and return. Then wipe the ears with the index fingers (inside) and thumbs (outside) using the same moisture.
Wash the feet to the ankles (fard) three times โ the right foot first, then the left. Run your little finger between the toes, and be sure the heels and ankles are covered.
Recite the dua after wudu. Looking upward, say:
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger." โ Sahih Muslim 234a
The Prophet ๏ทบ said that whoever completes their wudu and then says these words will have the eight gates of Paradise opened, to enter by whichever they wish (Sunan an-Nasa'i 148). You may add: Allahumma-j'alni mina at-tawwabina wa-j'alni mina al-mutatahhirin โ "O Allah, make me among those who repent and purify themselves."
That is one complete wudu. You can now pray. Browse our full dua collection for the supplications that come next, and if you're heading to the mosque, here is the dua for entering the masjid.

Now that you're in a state of wudu, you're ready for salah โ check your accurate prayer times above so you never miss a prayer once you're purified.
Differences Between the Madhabs
All four schools agree on the four obligatory washes from the Quran. They differ on a few conditions around them. None of these differences makes another school's wudu "wrong" โ they reflect different readings of the same evidence.
| Aspect | Hanafi | Shafi'i | Maliki | Hanbali |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intention (niyyah) | Sunnah | Obligatory | Obligatory | Obligatory |
| Order (tartib) | Sunnah | Obligatory | Sunnah | Obligatory |
| Continuity, no drying between (muwalat) | Sunnah | Sunnah | Obligatory | Obligatory |
| Wiping the head | A quarter suffices | Any part suffices | The entire head | The entire head |
In practice, if you wash everything in the Quranic order, with intention, without long pauses, and wipe your whole head, your wudu is valid in all four schools at once.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the elbows and heels. These are the two most-missed spots. Water must flow over the elbow and around the heel โ a quick splash is not enough. The Prophet ๏ทบ warned of "heels destined for the Fire" for those who leave them dry (Sahih al-Bukhari 164).
- Leaving nail polish on. It blocks the water and invalidates the wash. Remove it first.
- Wasting water. The Prophet ๏ทบ performed wudu with a small amount and disliked extravagance, even at a flowing river. Three washes is the maximum, not a target to exceed.
- Rushing and missing spots. A dry patch the size of a coin means that limb was not washed. Slow down enough to cover every part once.
- Redoing wudu out of doubt (waswas). If you completed it properly, trust that. Repeating endlessly out of uncertainty is a whisper to resist, not piety.

Does wudu break if I touch my phone or eat food? No. Touching everyday objects, eating, and drinking do not break wudu. Only specific events nullify it โ chiefly using the toilet, passing wind, deep sleep, and loss of consciousness.
Do I need a fresh wudu for every prayer? Not unless it has been nullified. One wudu covers as many prayers as you like until something breaks it, though renewing it is rewarded.
Can I make wudu over socks? Yes โ if you put leather or thick socks (khuff) on while already in wudu, you may wipe over them instead of washing the feet for up to one day (or three days when traveling).
Summary
Wudu is simple once the order is second nature: intention, Bismillah, hands, mouth, nose, face, arms to the elbows, wipe the head and ears, feet to the ankles, then the dua. Four of those are obligatory; the rest perfect the act and multiply the reward.
- The four fard acts come straight from Quran 5:6.
- The full method follows the Prophet's ๏ทบ own wudu (Sahih al-Bukhari 164).
- Finish with the shahada and watch the gates of Paradise open.
Make it well, and your prayer rests on a sound foundation. And Allah knows best (ูุงููู ุฃุนูู ).
Frequently Asked Questions
What breaks your wudu?
Wudu is nullified by using the toilet (urine or stool), passing wind, the emission of any impure discharge, deep sleep that removes awareness, and loss of consciousness. After any of these you must repeat wudu before praying. Light drowsiness while seated does not break it.
Can I pray more than one prayer with the same wudu?
Yes. One valid wudu lasts until something nullifies it, so you may pray several prayers, recite Quran, and perform other acts of worship with a single ablution. Many Muslims renew their wudu for each prayer because it is rewarded, but it is not required as long as the wudu remains intact.
Do I need to remove nail polish before wudu?
Yes. Ordinary nail polish forms a waterproof layer that stops water from reaching the nail, so the wudu is incomplete while it is on. You must remove it first. Henna is different: it only stains the skin and leaves no barrier, so wudu over henna is valid.
Do I have to say the intention for wudu out loud?
No. The intention (niyyah) is an act of the heart, not the tongue. Simply intending to perform wudu for the sake of Allah before you begin is enough. Saying it aloud is not part of the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and is not required in any of the four schools.
