The dua for entering the masjid is part of a complete Sunnah sequence โ not just a single phrase recited at the door, but a conscious transition from the world outside into the House of Allah. Knowing the full etiquette makes each visit to the mosque an act of worship from the moment you cross the threshold.
The Full Sunnah Sequence for Entering the Masjid
The Prophet ๏ทบ taught a precise order for entering the mosque. Follow these steps:
- Step in with your right foot first
- Say Bismillah
- Send salawat upon the Prophet ๏ทบ โ Allฤhumma แนฃalli สฟalฤ Muแธฅammad
- Recite the dua for entering
The Dua for Entering the Masjid
Arabic:
ุงููููููู ูู ุงููุชูุญู ููู ุฃูุจูููุงุจู ุฑูุญูู ูุชููู
Transliteration:
Allฤhumma iftaแธฅ lฤซ abwฤba raแธฅmatik
Translation:
"O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy."
Source: Muslim 713
This supplication is a request to receive not just physical entry but spiritual access โ to the mercy of Allah that the masjid represents. The "gates of mercy" are an acknowledgment that the mosque is a threshold between the busy world and the presence of Allah.
The Longer Version โ Seeking Refuge from Shaytan
There is an additional formula narrated in Abu Dawud that can be recited upon entering. It is often said before or alongside the main dua:
Transliteration:
Aสฟลซdhu billฤhil-สฟaแบฤซm, wa bi-wajhihil-karฤซm, wa sulแนญฤnihil-qadฤซm, mina-sh-shayแนญฤnir-rajฤซm
Translation:
"I seek refuge in Allah the Magnificent, and in His noble Face, and His eternal power, from Shaytan the accursed."
Source: Abu Dawud 466
When this is recited at the entrance, the scholars note that Shaytan says: "He is protected from me for the rest of the day." This makes it one of the most comprehensive formulas for beginning a visit to the mosque.
The Dua for Leaving the Masjid
Just as there is a dua for entering, the Prophet ๏ทบ taught a specific supplication for leaving โ and it mirrors the entry dua in a beautiful way.
Arabic:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ุฃูุณูุฃููููู ู ููู ููุถููููู
Transliteration:
Allฤhumma innฤซ as'aluka min faแธlik
Translation:
"O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty."
Source: Muslim 713
Step out with your left foot first, then recite this dua. You entered asking for Allah's mercy; you leave asking for His bounty in the world you are returning to. Together, the two duas frame your entire visit as an act of tawakkul and gratitude.
Tahiyyat al-Masjid โ The Greeting Prayer
Before sitting down inside the mosque, there is a confirmed Sunnah prayer called Tahiyyat al-Masjid (the greeting of the mosque). It consists of two raka'at and is performed immediately after entering.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"When one of you enters the mosque, he should not sit until he has prayed two raka'at." โ Bukhari 1163
This prayer is not an obligation, but it is a strong Sunnah. The only exception is when a fard (obligatory) prayer is about to begin โ in that case, the fard prayer serves as the greeting. Outside of that, sitting without praying Tahiyyat al-Masjid is something the Prophet ๏ทบ explicitly discouraged.
Etiquette of Entering the Masjid
Beyond the duas, the Sunnah establishes a set of manners for anyone entering a mosque:
- Right foot first on entry, left foot first on leaving โ this applies to any blessed place
- Remove shoes respectfully โ shoes are left at the entrance; do not cause disruption placing or retrieving them
- Lower your voice โ the masjid is a place of dhikr and salah; loud conversations are discouraged
- Avoid buying and selling inside โ the Prophet ๏ทบ said: "When you see someone buying or selling in the mosque, say: 'May Allah not make your trade profitable.'" (Tirmidhi 1321)
- Make intention (niyyah) to perform Tahiyyat al-Masjid before sitting
- Walk calmly โ rushing or being disruptive disrupts the concentration of those praying
Why the Sequence Matters
What distinguishes the dua for entering the masjid from a simple door supplication is the full Sunnah sequence attached to it. Each step โ the right foot, the Bismillah, the salawat, the dua, the two raka'at โ is a deliberate act of worship that converts your arrival into a comprehensive remembrance of Allah.
The Prophet ๏ทบ was meticulous about this sequence because the masjid is not like any other building. It is the house of Allah on earth. Entering it with awareness, dua, and the greeting prayer is a way of honoring that status and asking to be among those who receive its spiritual benefits.
Check your local prayer times before heading to the masjid so you can time your visit well and have space for Tahiyyat al-Masjid before the congregation begins.
