Fajr is the prayer that tests every Muslim. It arrives in the dark before sunrise, when sleep is heaviest and the bed is warmest — and that is exactly why it carries so much reward. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that the two light rakahs before Fajr are "better than the world and all it contains" (Sahih Muslim 725a).
The good news is that Fajr is the shortest of the five daily prayers. Its obligatory part is just two rakahs. This guide covers when Fajr starts and ends, exactly how to pray it, what to recite, and the practical habits that actually get you out of bed for it.
What you'll learn:
- When the Fajr window opens and closes
- The two sunnah and two fard rakahs, and which are required
- The full step-by-step method with what to recite
- How to wake up for Fajr and the mistakes to avoid
What Is Fajr and Why Does It Matter?
Fajr (فَجْر) is the dawn prayer, the first of the five daily prayers. It is prayed in the window between the break of true dawn and sunrise.
Allah (SWT) singles out the dawn prayer for special honor in the Quran:
أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَىٰ غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ ۖ إِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا
Aqim as-salata li-duluki ash-shamsi ila ghasaqi al-layli wa qur'ana al-fajr, inna qur'ana al-fajri kana mashhuda
"Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and the recitation of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed." — Surah Al-Isra, 17:78
Scholars explain that "ever witnessed" means the angels of the night and the angels of the day are both present at Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ also said that whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah for that day (Sahih Muslim 657), and that whoever prays the two cool prayers — Fajr and Asr — will enter Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari 574).
When Is the Time for Fajr?
The Fajr window has a clear start and a hard end:
- Start: at true dawn (al-fajr as-sadiq) — the white light that spreads horizontally across the horizon.
- End: at sunrise. The moment the top of the sun appears, Fajr time is over.
That gives you roughly 60 to 90 minutes, depending on your location and season. Praying it early, soon after the adhan, is best. Because the exact dawn time shifts every single day, never estimate it — check your accurate local prayer times so you catch the start of the window.
How Many Rakahs Is Fajr?
Fajr is unique: it has only two fard rakahs, the fewest of any prayer. Before them, the Prophet ﷺ was so consistent in praying two sunnah rakahs that he rarely left them, even when traveling.
| Part | Rakahs | Ruling |
|---|---|---|
| Sunnah before Fajr | 2 | Highly recommended (sunnah mu'akkadah) |
| Fard (obligatory) | 2 | Required |
| Total | 4 | — |
Only the two fard rakahs are obligatory. But given the immense reward of the sunnah rakahs, try to pray all four. Note that there are no sunnah rakahs after Fajr, and voluntary prayer is not allowed once the sun has risen until it is fully up.
Step-by-Step: How to Pray Fajr
First, make sure you have valid wudu — if you need it, see our guide on how to perform wudu. Then face the qiblah and make your intention for Fajr in your heart. The two fard rakahs go like this:
Opening takbir. Stand, raise your hands to your shoulders or ears, and say:
اللَّهُ أَكْبَر — Allahu Akbar — "Allah is the Greatest."
Recite Al-Fatiha aloud. Place your right hand over your left. Recite Surah Al-Fatiha — required in every rakah — followed by another surah or some verses. Fajr is recited out loud, so say it audibly (softly if praying alone, or as the imam leads in congregation).
Bow (ruku). Say Allahu Akbar, bend with a flat back and hands on your knees, and say three times:
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيم — Subhana Rabbi al-Adheem — "Glory to my Lord, the Most Great."
Rise from bowing. Stand upright and say:
سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ، رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْد — Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka al-hamd — "Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, to You is all praise."
Prostrate (sujud) twice. Say Allahu Akbar and go down with forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes on the ground. Say three times: Subhana Rabbi al-A'la — "Glory to my Lord, the Most High." Sit up briefly, then prostrate a second time the same way. That completes the first rakah.
Stand for the second rakah. Rise saying Allahu Akbar and repeat the recitation, bowing, and two prostrations.
Sit for tashahhud and salam. After the second prostration of the second rakah, sit and recite the tashahhud, send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, then turn your face right and left, each time saying:
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّه — As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah — "Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you."
Many also recite the Qunoot supplication in the second rakah of Fajr after rising from bowing — a practice the Shafi'i school recommends regularly, while others reserve it for times of need. If you are new, learning the basic prayer first is perfectly fine.

Because the Fajr window closes the instant the sun rises, timing is everything — use the prayer times above to know precisely when dawn begins where you live.
Differences Between the Madhabs
The four schools agree on the two fard rakahs and the audible recitation. They differ mainly on the Qunoot.
| Aspect | Hanafi | Shafi'i | Maliki | Hanbali |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qunoot in Fajr | Not regular | Recited every Fajr | Recommended quietly | Only in times of calamity |
| Making up missed sunnah | After sunrise is allowed | Allowed | Allowed | Allowed |
| Recitation volume | Aloud | Aloud | Aloud | Aloud |
All four agree the prayer itself is two fard rakahs recited aloud — follow the practice taught at your local mosque.

See all →How to Actually Wake Up for Fajr
The hardest part of Fajr is not the prayer — it is the waking. A few practical habits help:
- Sleep earlier. The Prophet ﷺ disliked staying up late after Isha. An early night is the real key to an easy Fajr.
- Set the intention before sleeping. Genuinely intend to wake for Fajr; sincerity invites help.
- Place the alarm across the room. Force yourself to physically get up to turn it off.
- Sleep in wudu and recite the dua before sleeping — it settles the heart toward worship.
- Ask others to wake you. A family member or a friend's call builds accountability.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Praying after sunrise. Once the sun begins to rise, the Fajr time has ended. Pray it before then, or make it up as a missed prayer.
- Reciting silently. Fajr is an audible prayer. Even praying alone, voice the recitation softly rather than only in your head.
- Skipping the two sunnah rakahs. They are among the most rewarded voluntary acts in Islam — do not leave them out of habit.
- Rushing because you are sleepy. Stillness in each posture is required. A hurried Fajr that skips the calm of bowing and prostration is incomplete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pray Fajr sunnah after the fard if I ran out of time? Yes. If you arrive late and only have time for the two fard rakahs before sunrise, pray the fard first. You may make up the two sunnah rakahs after sunrise, which several scholars permit.
Is Fajr the same as the dawn prayer or the morning prayer? Yes — "Fajr," "the dawn prayer," and "the morning prayer" all refer to the same prayer, prayed between true dawn and sunrise. It is sometimes also called Subh.
Do I recite out loud even when praying alone? Yes. Fajr is an audible prayer, so you should voice the recitation, though you can keep it soft when praying by yourself.
Summary
Fajr is short, early, and immensely rewarding. Pray two sunnah rakahs, then two fard rakahs, all within the window from true dawn to sunrise.
- Fajr is two fard rakahs, recited aloud, preceded by two sunnah rakahs.
- Its window runs from true dawn to sunrise (Surah Al-Isra, 17:78).
- The one who prays it is under Allah's protection that day (Sahih Muslim 657).
Guard your Fajr, and the rest of your day stands on solid ground. And Allah knows best (والله أعلم).
Frequently Asked Questions
How many rakahs is Fajr prayer?
Fajr has two obligatory (fard) rakahs. Before them, the Prophet, peace be upon him, regularly prayed two sunnah rakahs, so the full Fajr is four rakahs total: two sunnah followed by two fard. Only the two fard rakahs are required; the two sunnah are highly recommended but optional.
What is the time for Fajr prayer?
Fajr begins at the true dawn (the first light spreading across the horizon) and ends at sunrise. Once the sun begins to rise, the time for Fajr is over and it becomes a missed prayer. The window is roughly 60 to 90 minutes depending on your location and the season.
What do you recite in Fajr prayer?
In each of the two rakahs you recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by another portion of the Quran. The Prophet, peace be upon him, recited aloud in Fajr and often chose longer surahs. The recitation in Fajr is done out loud, unlike the silent recitation of Dhuhr and Asr.
What if I wake up after sunrise and missed Fajr?
Pray it as soon as you wake. The Prophet, peace be upon him, taught that whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it should pray it when they remember, with no other expiation. So make up the missed Fajr immediately rather than waiting for the next prayer or skipping it.
