Dhuhr is the prayer that lands in the middle of a busy day. The sun is high, work and errands are in full swing, and stepping away to pray takes real intention. That is part of its value: pausing for Dhuhr breaks the rush of the afternoon and re-centers your whole day on Allah (SWT).
Dhuhr is the second of the five daily prayers and the first one prayed after the sun begins to decline. This guide covers when its window opens and closes, exactly how to pray its four rakahs, what to recite, and how the four madhabs differ on the sunnah prayers around it.
What you'll learn:
- When the Dhuhr window opens and closes
- The four sunnah and four fard rakahs, and which are required
- The full step-by-step method, prayed silently
- The madhab differences and the mistakes to avoid
What Is Dhuhr and Why Does It Matter?
Dhuhr (ุธูููุฑ) is the midday or early-afternoon prayer, the second of the five daily prayers. It is prayed in the window that opens just after the sun passes its highest point in the sky.
Allah (SWT) commands the daily prayers, beginning with the decline of the sun, in the Quran:
ุฃูููู ู ุงูุตููููุงุฉู ููุฏูููููู ุงูุดููู ูุณู ุฅูููููฐ ุบูุณููู ุงูููููููู
Aqim as-salata li-duluki ash-shamsi ila ghasaqi al-layl
"Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night." โ Surah Al-Isra, 17:78
Scholars explain that "the decline of the sun" (duluk ash-shams) marks the start of Dhuhr, and the verse then runs through the prayers until night. So Dhuhr is the first prayer named in this command โ the one that opens the afternoon's worship.
One important note: on Fridays, the Dhuhr prayer is replaced for men by the Jumu'ah (Friday) prayer, prayed in congregation with a khutbah. On every other day, and for anyone who misses Jumu'ah, you pray Dhuhr as described here.
When Is the Time for Dhuhr?
The Prophet ๏ทบ defined the Dhuhr window precisely:
ููููุชู ุงูุธููููุฑู ุฅูุฐูุง ุฒูุงููุชู ุงูุดููู ูุณู ููููุงูู ุธูููู ุงูุฑููุฌููู ููุทูููููู ู ูุง ููู ู ููุญูุถูุฑู ุงููุนูุตูุฑู
Waqtu az-zuhri idha zalat ash-shamsu wa kana zillu ar-rajuli ka-tulihi ma lam yahduri al-asr
"The time of Dhuhr is when the sun has passed the zenith and a man's shadow is equal to his height, as long as the time for Asr has not come." โ Sahih Muslim 612d
In plain terms:
- Start: just after zawal โ the moment the sun passes its highest point and begins to descend. Praying right at noon, while the sun is still at its peak, is not valid; wait until it has clearly declined.
- End: when the shadow of an object becomes equal to its own length (plus the shadow it cast at noon). At that point Asr time begins.
That gives you a long window across the afternoon, so Dhuhr is rarely rushed. Still, the best practice is to pray it soon after the adhan. Because the exact zawal time shifts every day, never guess it โ check your accurate local prayer times so you know precisely when the window opens where you live.
How Many Rakahs Is Dhuhr?
Dhuhr has four fard rakahs. Around them, the Prophet ๏ทบ regularly prayed sunnah rakahs, and being consistent with them carries a great reward. Umm Habibah (RA) reported that the Prophet ๏ทบ said whoever prays twelve voluntary rakahs in a day and night will have a house built for them in Paradise (Sahih Muslim 728). Of those twelve, four come before Dhuhr and two after it (Jami at-Tirmidhi 414).
| Part | Rakahs | Ruling |
|---|---|---|
| Sunnah before Dhuhr | 4 | Confirmed sunnah (mu'akkadah) |
| Fard (obligatory) | 4 | Required |
| Sunnah after Dhuhr | 2 | Confirmed sunnah (mu'akkadah) |
| Total | 10 | โ |
Only the four fard rakahs are obligatory. The six sunnah rakahs around them are highly recommended, not required โ but given the promise of a house in Paradise, they are well worth keeping. If you are short on time, pray the four fard first and add the sunnah when you can.
Step-by-Step: How to Pray Dhuhr (4 Fard Rakahs)
First, make sure you have valid wudu โ if you need it, see our guide on how to perform wudu. Then face the qiblah and make your intention for Dhuhr in your heart. Dhuhr is recited silently, so move your lips and recite quietly to yourself throughout.
Opening takbir. Stand, raise your hands to your shoulders or ears, and say:
ุงูููููู ุฃูููุจูุฑ โ Allahu Akbar โ "Allah is the Greatest."
First rakah. Place your right hand over your left. Recite Surah Al-Fatiha โ required in every rakah โ followed by another surah or some verses, all silently.
Bow (ruku). Say Allahu Akbar, bend with a flat back and hands on your knees, and say three times:
ุณูุจูุญูุงูู ุฑูุจูููู ุงููุนูุธููู โ Subhana Rabbi al-Adheem โ "Glory to my Lord, the Most Great."
Rise from bowing. Stand upright and say:
ุณูู ูุนู ุงูููููู ููู ููู ุญูู ูุฏูููุ ุฑูุจููููุง ูููููู ุงููุญูู ูุฏ โ Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka al-hamd โ "Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, to You is all praise."
Prostrate (sujud) twice. Say Allahu Akbar and go down with forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes on the ground. Say three times: Subhana Rabbi al-A'la โ "Glory to my Lord, the Most High." Sit up briefly, then prostrate a second time the same way. That completes the first rakah.
Second rakah. Stand saying Allahu Akbar and repeat the recitation, bowing, and two prostrations.
First tashahhud. After the second prostration of the second rakah, sit and recite the tashahhud (At-Tahiyyat). In a four-rakah prayer you do not give salam here โ you rise for the third rakah.
Third and fourth rakahs. Stand saying Allahu Akbar. In each of these last two rakahs, recite only Surah Al-Fatiha (no additional surah), then bow and prostrate as before.
Final tashahhud and salam. After the second prostration of the fourth rakah, sit, recite the full tashahhud, send blessings on the Prophet ๏ทบ (the salat ala an-Nabi), then turn your face right and left, each time saying:
ุงูุณููููุงู ู ุนูููููููู ู ููุฑูุญูู ูุฉู ุงููููู โ As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah โ "Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you."
That completes the four fard rakahs. For the complete pattern that underlies all five prayers, see our full guide on how to pray salah for beginners.

Because Dhuhr cannot begin until the sun has passed its zenith, use the prayer times above to know the exact moment the window opens where you live.
Differences Between the Madhabs
The four schools agree on the core: Dhuhr is four fard rakahs, recited silently. They differ mainly on the regular sunnah (rawatib) prayers around it.
| Aspect | Hanafi | Shafi'i | Maliki | Hanbali |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Confirmed sunnah before | 4 | 2 | Recommended nafl | 4 |
| Confirmed sunnah after | 2 | 2 | Recommended nafl | 2 |
| Fard rakahs | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| Recitation | Silent | Silent | Silent | Silent |
All four agree the obligation is four silent fard rakahs. The Hanafi and Hanbali schools stress four sunnah before and two after; the Shafi'i school counts two confirmed sunnah before and two after; the Maliki school treats the surrounding voluntary prayers as recommended (nafl) rather than a fixed count. Follow the practice taught at your local mosque.

See all โCommon Mistakes to Avoid
- Praying before zawal. Dhuhr cannot start while the sun is still at its peak. Wait until it has clearly begun to decline, then pray.
- Reciting out loud. Dhuhr is a silent prayer. Even leading others, the imam recites Al-Fatiha and the surah quietly โ unlike Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha.
- Adding a surah in the last two rakahs. In the third and fourth rakahs of the fard, you recite only Al-Fatiha. Adding another surah there is not the sunnah.
- Forgetting the first tashahhud. Sitting after the second rakah for the first tashahhud is part of the prayer. If you stand up forgetting it, you make up for it with the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud as-sahw).
- Skipping Dhuhr on Friday without praying Jumu'ah. Men who can attend Jumu'ah must pray it instead of Dhuhr; do not skip both.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dhuhr the same as the noon or midday prayer? Yes โ "Dhuhr," "the noon prayer," and "the midday prayer" all refer to the same prayer, prayed after the sun passes its zenith. It is sometimes also called Zuhr (the same word, spelled differently).
Do I recite silently even when praying alone? Yes. Dhuhr is a silent prayer in every case. Whether you pray alone or in congregation, you recite Al-Fatiha and the surah quietly, not aloud.
Can I combine Dhuhr with Asr? When traveling or in genuine hardship, many scholars allow combining Dhuhr and Asr at one of the two times. In normal circumstances, each prayer should be prayed in its own window.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rakahs is Dhuhr prayer?
Dhuhr has four obligatory (fard) rakahs. Around them, the Prophet, peace be upon him, regularly prayed four sunnah rakahs before and two after, making the full Dhuhr ten rakahs: four sunnah, four fard, then two sunnah. Only the four fard rakahs are required; the sunnah rakahs are highly recommended but optional.
What time is Dhuhr prayer?
Dhuhr begins just after the sun passes its highest point at midday (zawal) and lasts until an object's shadow grows equal to its own length, when Asr begins. The window covers most of the early afternoon, so there is usually plenty of time, but praying it early is best.
Is Dhuhr prayer silent or out loud?
Dhuhr is a silent prayer. You recite Surah Al-Fatiha and the following verses quietly to yourself, moving your lips without raising your voice. This is unlike Fajr and Maghrib, where the recitation is said aloud. Asr is also recited silently, like Dhuhr.
What if I missed Dhuhr and Asr time has started?
Pray it as soon as you can. The Prophet, peace be upon him, taught that whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it should pray it when they remember. So make up the missed Dhuhr immediately as a qada prayer rather than skipping it, even if Asr time has already begun.
