Asr arrives late in the afternoon, when energy dips and the day's tasks pile up. It is also one of the most emphasized prayers in all of Islam โ the Quran singles it out, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave stern warnings against missing it. Guarding Asr is a real test of priorities, which is exactly why it carries such weight.
Asr is the third of the five daily prayers, prayed in the second half of the afternoon. This guide covers when its window opens and closes, exactly how to pray its four rakahs, what to recite, and why scholars call it the middle prayer.
What you'll learn:
- When the Asr window opens and closes
- How many rakahs Asr is, and which are required
- The full step-by-step method, prayed silently
- Why Asr is the middle prayer and the mistakes to avoid
What Is Asr and Why Does It Matter?
Asr (ุนูุตูุฑ) is the late-afternoon prayer, the third of the five daily prayers. It falls between Dhuhr and the sunset prayer of Maghrib.
Allah (SWT) gives Asr a special place by naming it the "middle prayer" in the Quran:
ุญูุงููุธููุง ุนูููู ุงูุตููููููุงุชู ููุงูุตููููุงุฉู ุงููููุณูุทูููฐ ูููููู ููุง ููููููู ููุงููุชูููู
Hafizu ala as-salawati was-salati al-wusta wa qumu lillahi qanitin
"Guard strictly the prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah devoutly obedient." โ Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:238
The majority of scholars identify this "middle prayer" as Asr, based on the Prophet's own words. During the Battle of the Trench, when the disbelievers kept the Muslims from praying Asr on time, the Prophet ๏ทบ said:
ุดูุบููููููุง ุนููู ุงูุตููููุงุฉู ุงููููุณูุทูู ุตูููุงุฉู ุงููุนูุตูุฑ
Shaghaluna an as-salati al-wusta, salati al-asr
"They kept us from the middle prayer, the Asr prayer." โ Sahih al-Bukhari 2931
The warnings against neglecting Asr are severe. The Prophet ๏ทบ said that whoever misses the Asr prayer, it is as if they have lost their family and property (Sahih al-Bukhari 552), and that whoever abandons the Asr prayer, their deeds are nullified (Sahih al-Bukhari 553). On the other hand, whoever prays the two cool prayers โ Fajr and Asr โ will enter Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari 574).
When Is the Time for Asr?
The Asr window has a clear start and a hard end:
- Start: when the shadow of an object becomes equal to its own length (in addition to the small shadow it cast at noon). This is the moment Dhuhr time ends.
- End: at sunset. The Asr time runs right up to the moment the sun sets.
While the window lasts until sunset, the strongly preferred practice is to pray Asr early โ before the sun begins to turn yellow and weak. Delaying it without reason until the very end of the window is disliked. Because the exact shadow time shifts every day, never estimate it โ check your accurate local prayer times so you catch Asr early in its window.
How Many Rakahs Is Asr?
Asr is four fard rakahs. Unlike Dhuhr, it has no confirmed (mu'akkadah) sunnah rakahs attached to it. The Prophet ๏ทบ did encourage a voluntary prayer before it โ "May Allah have mercy on a man who prays four rakahs before Asr" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 430, graded hasan) โ but this is recommended, not a stressed sunnah.
| Part | Rakahs | Ruling |
|---|---|---|
| Voluntary before Asr | 4 | Recommended (not stressed) |
| Fard (obligatory) | 4 | Required |
| Total | 4 (fard) | โ |
So your obligation for Asr is simply the four fard rakahs. The four voluntary rakahs beforehand are a beautiful extra if you have the time, but no sunnah rakahs are prayed after Asr โ in fact, voluntary prayer is disliked once you have prayed Asr until after Maghrib.
Step-by-Step: How to Pray Asr (4 Fard Rakahs)
First, make sure you have valid wudu โ if you need it, see our guide on how to perform wudu. Then face the qiblah and make your intention for Asr in your heart. Like Dhuhr, Asr is recited silently, so move your lips and recite quietly to yourself throughout.
Opening takbir. Stand, raise your hands to your shoulders or ears, and say:
ุงูููููู ุฃูููุจูุฑ โ Allahu Akbar โ "Allah is the Greatest."
First rakah. Place your right hand over your left. Recite Surah Al-Fatiha โ required in every rakah โ followed by another surah or some verses, all silently.
Bow (ruku). Say Allahu Akbar, bend with a flat back and hands on your knees, and say three times:
ุณูุจูุญูุงูู ุฑูุจูููู ุงููุนูุธููู โ Subhana Rabbi al-Adheem โ "Glory to my Lord, the Most Great."
Rise from bowing. Stand upright and say:
ุณูู ูุนู ุงูููููู ููู ููู ุญูู ูุฏูููุ ุฑูุจููููุง ูููููู ุงููุญูู ูุฏ โ Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka al-hamd โ "Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, to You is all praise."
Prostrate (sujud) twice. Say Allahu Akbar and go down with forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes on the ground. Say three times: Subhana Rabbi al-A'la โ "Glory to my Lord, the Most High." Sit up briefly, then prostrate a second time the same way. That completes the first rakah.
Second rakah. Stand saying Allahu Akbar and repeat the recitation, bowing, and two prostrations.
First tashahhud. After the second prostration of the second rakah, sit and recite the tashahhud (At-Tahiyyat). Do not give salam here โ rise for the third rakah.
Third and fourth rakahs. Stand saying Allahu Akbar. In each of these last two rakahs, recite only Surah Al-Fatiha (no additional surah), then bow and prostrate as before.
Final tashahhud and salam. After the second prostration of the fourth rakah, sit, recite the full tashahhud, send blessings on the Prophet ๏ทบ, then turn your face right and left, each time saying:
ุงูุณููููุงู ู ุนูููููููู ู ููุฑูุญูู ูุฉู ุงููููู โ As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah โ "Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you."
The four fard rakahs of Asr follow the same pattern as Dhuhr โ see our how to pray Dhuhr guide for the same four-rakah method, and our full how to pray salah for beginners guide for the underlying steps.

Because praying Asr early is best and its window closes at sunset, use the prayer times above to catch it on time where you live.
Differences Between the Madhabs
The four schools agree that Asr is four fard rakahs recited silently. The most famous difference is over exactly when Asr begins.
| Aspect | Hanafi | Shafi'i | Maliki | Hanbali |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start of Asr | Shadow = twice object's length (Abu Hanifa) | One shadow-length | One shadow-length | One shadow-length |
| Voluntary before Asr | 4 recommended | 4 recommended | Nafl | 4 recommended |
| Fard rakahs | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| Recitation | Silent | Silent | Silent | Silent |
The majority of schools โ and the two main students of Abu Hanifa (Abu Yusuf and Muhammad ash-Shaybani) โ hold that Asr begins once an object's shadow equals its own length. Abu Hanifa's reported view that it begins at twice the shadow length is the well-known minority position. In practice, most mosques and prayer-time tables follow the one-shadow-length view. Follow the practice taught at your local mosque.

See all โCommon Mistakes to Avoid
- Delaying Asr until the sun yellows. The window lasts until sunset, but praying it late without reason is disliked. Pray Asr early, while the sun is still high and white.
- Reciting out loud. Asr is a silent prayer, like Dhuhr. The imam recites Al-Fatiha and the surah quietly โ not aloud as in Fajr or Maghrib.
- Treating Asr as optional when busy. Asr is the prayer the Quran and Sunnah warn most strongly about. A missed Asr is described as losing one's family and property โ never let work crowd it out.
- Praying voluntary prayers after Asr. Once you have prayed Asr, voluntary (nafl) prayer is disliked until after Maghrib. Make-up of missed obligatory prayers is still allowed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Asr the same as the afternoon prayer? Yes โ "Asr," "the afternoon prayer," and "the middle prayer" all refer to the same prayer, prayed from when an object's shadow equals its length until sunset.
Do I recite silently even when praying alone? Yes. Asr is a silent prayer in every case. Whether you pray alone or behind an imam, you recite Al-Fatiha and the surah quietly to yourself.
What if I am about to miss Asr before sunset? Pray it immediately, even with just enough time for one rakah before sunset, and you have caught the prayer. If you missed it entirely, pray it as a make-up (qada) as soon as you remember.
Summary
Asr is the middle prayer the Quran tells us to guard above the rest: four fard rakahs, recited silently, best prayed early in the afternoon.
- Asr is four fard rakahs, recited silently, with no confirmed sunnah attached.
- Its window runs from one shadow-length until sunset, and praying it early is best.
- It is the middle prayer the Quran commands us to guard (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:238), and missing it is gravely warned against (Sahih al-Bukhari 553).
Protect your Asr in the middle of the afternoon, and you protect the prayer Allah singled out by name. And Allah knows best (ูุงููู ุฃุนูู ).
Frequently Asked Questions
How many rakahs is Asr prayer?
Asr has four obligatory (fard) rakahs and no confirmed sunnah rakahs around it. The Prophet, peace be upon him, encouraged praying four voluntary rakahs before Asr, but these are recommended, not stressed sunnah. So the required Asr is simply four fard rakahs, recited silently.
What time is Asr prayer?
Asr begins when an object's shadow becomes equal to its own length, just after Dhuhr time ends, and lasts until sunset. It is best to pray Asr early, before the sun begins to turn yellow, rather than delaying it to the last part of the window.
Why is Asr called the middle prayer?
The majority of scholars identify Asr as the middle prayer (salat al-wusta) mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:238. The Prophet, peace be upon him, named it directly during the Battle of the Trench when the enemy kept the Muslims from praying it on time, calling it the middle prayer, the Asr prayer.
Is Asr prayer silent or out loud?
Asr is a silent prayer. You recite Surah Al-Fatiha and the verses after it quietly to yourself, the same way you pray Dhuhr. This differs from Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha, where the first rakahs are recited aloud. Asr's recitation is always done silently.
