This dua is recited in the third takbir of the janazah prayer. Memorising it is one of the most valuable acts a Muslim can do โ none of us knows when we will need to lead or participate in a funeral prayer.
Dua When Visiting Graves
When you visit a Muslim graveyard, the Prophet ๏ทบ taught us to greet its inhabitants and pray for them.

Recite this regularly for your parents โ alive or deceased. The Prophet ๏ทบ confirmed that a righteous child's dua reaches the deceased parent: "When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, and a righteous child who prays for him." (Muslim, 1631)
You can find this and more supplications in our complete Dua Collection.

The Mercy of Allah for the Deceased
Islam teaches that the living and the dead remain connected through supplication and righteous deeds. Every dua you make for a deceased Muslim is an act of worship rewarded by Allah ๏ทป โ for you and, by His mercy, for them.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The dua of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is answered." (Muslim, 2733). This applies equally to those who have already passed. Do not underestimate the power of sincere supplication โ it may be the means by which Allah ๏ทป elevates the rank of your loved one in the grave and in the Hereafter.

Can I make dua for a deceased non-Muslim?
You cannot make dua asking Allah to forgive or have mercy on a deceased non-Muslim who died in a state of disbelief. The Quran prohibits this (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:113). However, you may have made dua for them to accept Islam while they were alive.
Does dua benefit the deceased after death?
Yes. The Prophet ๏ทบ said that three things continue to benefit a person after death: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who prays for them (Muslim 1631). Making dua for the deceased is one of the greatest gifts you can give them.
What is the dua to say when someone dies?
When you hear of someone's death, say: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' โ Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:156). You can then follow it with the main janazah dua asking Allah to forgive and have mercy on them.
How often should I make dua for my deceased parents?
There is no fixed limit. The Quran instructs believers to say: 'Rabbir hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira' โ My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was young (Surah Al-Isra, 17:24). Making this dua regularly after every prayer is a beloved sunnah.
