Witr is the prayer that seals your night. Its name means "odd," and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made it the closing prayer after Isha โ an odd number of rakahs offered before dawn. He guarded it so closely that he said, "Make witr as your last prayer at night" (Sahih al-Bukhari 998).
This guide walks you through exactly when Witr begins and ends, how many rakahs to pray, the two main methods, and the full Dua al-Qunoot in Arabic with translation.
What you'll learn:
- When the Witr window opens and the latest you can pray it
- How many rakahs Witr is and the different valid methods
- The full step-by-step method, including Dua al-Qunoot
- The madhab differences and the mistakes people make most
What Is Witr and Why Does It Matter?
Witr (ููุชูุฑ) means "odd number." It is a night prayer of an odd count of rakahs, prayed after Isha to close out your day of worship. The Prophet ๏ทบ emphasized it as a due upon every Muslim, while leaving the count flexible:
Al-witru haqqun ala kulli muslim, faman ahabba an yutira bi-khamsin falyaf'al, wa man ahabba an yutira bi-thalathin falyaf'al, wa man ahabba an yutira bi-wahidatin falyaf'al
"Witr is a duty upon every Muslim. Whoever wishes to pray Witr with five, let him do so; whoever wishes with three, let him do so; and whoever wishes with one, let him do so." โ Narrated by Abu Dawud (Sunan Abi Dawud 1422)
So Witr is not a minor extra. The word haqq here means a right or due, which the schools weigh differently: the Hanafi school classes Witr as wajib (necessary), while the others hold it a strongly confirmed sunnah. Either way, the scholars agree โ do not leave it.
When Is the Time for Witr?
The Witr window runs the entire night after Isha:
- Start: immediately after you have prayed the Isha fard prayer.
- End: the arrival of true dawn (the start of Fajr).
- Best practice: the last prayer you offer before sleeping โ unless you are sure you will wake for Tahajjud.
The Prophet ๏ทบ gave a simple rule for timing it:
"Make witr as your last prayer at night." โ Narrated by al-Bukhari (Sahih al-Bukhari 998)
If you regularly wake in the night, you can delay Witr and pray it after Tahajjud, since it should be the final thing you pray. But if you are unsure you will wake, pray it before bed. The exact Isha and Fajr times shift through the year, so check your accurate local prayer times to know how much of the night you have.
How Many Rakahs Is Witr?
Witr is always an odd number โ one, three, five, seven, or more. The two most common forms are one rakah and three rakahs. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) described the Prophet's night prayer ending in three:
"He used to offer four rakahsโฆ then four rakahsโฆ and then three rakahs." โ Narrated by al-Bukhari (Sahih al-Bukhari 1147)
| Method | Rakahs | How it's prayed | Common among |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Witr | 1 | One rakah on its own, after an even prayer | Shafi'i, Hanbali, Maliki |
| Three joined | 3 | Three rakahs together, one tashahhud at the end | Hanafi |
| Three as 2 + 1 | 3 | Two rakahs with salam, then one separate rakah | Shafi'i, Hanbali |
The simplest valid Witr is one rakah. The most common in practice is three. Pick the method taught at your local mosque and stay consistent with it.
Step-by-Step: How to Pray Witr (Three Rakahs)
Make sure you have valid wudu first โ if you need it, see our guide on how to perform wudu. Then face the qiblah and make your intention in your heart to pray Witr. This walks through the common three-rakah method.
Opening takbir. Stand, raise your hands to your shoulders or ears, and say:
ุงูููููู ุฃูููุจูุฑ โ Allahu Akbar โ "Allah is the Greatest."
First rakah. Place your right hand over your left, recite Surah Al-Fatiha, then another surah. Bow (ruku), then prostrate twice โ exactly as in any prayer.
Second rakah. Stand and pray a second rakah the same way: Al-Fatiha, a surah, ruku, and two prostrations.
Sit for tashahhud. In the Hanafi method you sit after the second rakah, recite the tashahhud, and stand back up without giving salam. (In the 2 + 1 method, you give salam here, then stand for a separate single rakah.)
Third rakah and Qunoot. Stand, recite Surah Al-Fatiha and a short surah. Before bowing (Hanafi) or after rising from ruku (Shafi'i/Hanbali), raise your hands and recite Dua al-Qunoot (full text below).
Final tashahhud and salam. Complete the third rakah's ruku and prostrations, sit for the full tashahhud, send blessings on the Prophet ๏ทบ, then turn your face right and left, each time saying:
ุงูุณููููุงู ู ุนูููููููู ู ููุฑูุญูู ูุฉู ุงููููู โ As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah โ "Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you."
That completes your Witr and seals your night of prayer.
The Dua al-Qunoot
The Prophet ๏ทบ taught this supplication to his grandson al-Hasan ibn Ali to recite in Witr:
"O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me wellbeing among those You have granted wellbeing, take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care, bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. For You decree, and none can decree against You. He whom You befriend is never humbled. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted." โ Narrated by Abu Dawud (Sunan Abi Dawud 1425)
Reciting Qunoot is recommended, not required โ your Witr is valid without it. For more on this supplication, see our guide to the dua for Qunoot.

Differences Between the Madhabs
The four schools agree Witr is an odd, emphasized night prayer, but they differ on its ruling and exact form.
| Aspect | Hanafi | Shafi'i | Maliki | Hanbali |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ruling | Wajib (necessary) | Sunnah mu'akkadah | Sunnah mu'akkadah | Sunnah mu'akkadah |
| Common form | 3 joined, one salam | 1, or 2 + 1 | 1 after a shaf'ah of 2 | 1, or 2 + 1 |
| Qunoot timing | Before ruku, every night | After ruku, latter Ramadan | In Subh prayer, not Witr | After ruku, latter Ramadan |
All four agree Witr should not be skipped. The differences are in the details of weight and method, not in whether to pray it. Follow the practice of your local mosque or madhab.

See all โCommon Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping Witr entirely. It is the seal of the night โ wajib for the Hanafis and a confirmed sunnah for everyone else. Do not leave it out of habit.
- Praying an even number. Witr must be odd. Two rakahs alone is not Witr; you need one, three, or more.
- Praying Witr, then "topping it up" later. Once you have prayed Witr, do not pray another Witr the same night. The Prophet ๏ทบ said, "There are no two Witrs in one night" (Sunan Abi Dawud 1439). If you wake for Tahajjud, pray it in pairs without a second Witr.
- Delaying it past dawn. Once true dawn arrives, the Witr time has gone. If you miss it, make it up later as the scholars of your madhab advise.
- Treating Qunoot as obligatory. Qunoot is recommended. Missing it does not break your Witr.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pray Witr right after Isha? Yes. Witr's time begins the moment you finish the Isha fard, so you can pray it immediately after Isha and its sunnah. This is the safest habit if you are not certain you will wake during the night.
What if I want to pray Tahajjud โ do I still pray Witr after Isha? If you are confident you will wake, delay Witr and pray it after your Tahajjud, keeping it as the last prayer of your night. If you are unsure, pray Witr after Isha; you can still pray Tahajjud later in pairs.
Is one rakah of Witr really enough? Yes. The Prophet ๏ทบ affirmed that a single rakah at the end of the night is a valid Witr (Sahih al-Bukhari 990). One rakah is the minimum; three is more common.
Summary

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rakahs is Witr prayer?
Witr is an odd number of rakahs, most commonly one or three. The Prophet, peace be upon him, prayed Witr as anything from a single rakah up to eleven, but one and three are the most common. The Hanafi school prays three joined together, while the other schools often pray one rakah after an even set.
What is the time for Witr prayer?
Witr is prayed any time after the Isha prayer and before true dawn (Fajr). The Prophet said to make Witr the last prayer of your night. If you are confident you will wake before dawn, you can delay it to pray Tahajjud first; otherwise, pray Witr before sleeping.
Is Witr wajib or sunnah?
The Hanafi school holds that Witr is wajib (necessary), close in weight to obligatory. The Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools hold it is a strongly confirmed sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah). All four schools agree it should never be abandoned, as the Prophet prayed it constantly and urged the believers to guard it.
What dua do you read in Witr?
Many recite Dua al-Qunoot in the final rakah of Witr, beginning 'Allahumma-hdini fiman hadayt' โ 'O Allah, guide me among those You have guided.' The Prophet taught this supplication to his grandson al-Hasan ibn Ali. Reciting Qunoot is recommended, not obligatory, and the Witr is valid without it.
