Soft cream and green illustration with the title Dua During Wudu

The authentic remembrance for wudu comes at two points: say Bismillah as you begin, and say the shahada when you finish. The narrations cited here do not give a separate dua for each limb you wash. Below you will find the Arabic, the meaning, where each wording comes from and how strong its chain is.

Before wudu: Bismillah

ุจูุณู’ู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู

Bismillah means "in the name of Allah."

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "There is no wudu for one who does not mention Allah's name over it" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 25). The same wording comes through Abu Sa'id in Sunan Ibn Majah 397, graded hasan, and through Abu Hurairah in Sunan Abi Dawud 101, graded sahih by al-Albani.

Scholars read these reports differently. In his notes on hadith 25, Imam at-Tirmidhi quotes Ahmad ibn Hanbal saying he knew of no hadith on this topic with a good chain. He quotes Ishaq ibn Rahwayh saying that someone who leaves the tasmiyah deliberately should repeat wudu, while someone who forgets it has a valid wudu. Egypt's Dar al-Ifta includes saying Bismillah, together with the intention in your heart, as the first step of wudu (Dar al-Ifta, How to perform Wudhu).

In practice: say Bismillah every time. If you forget, follow the view of your school or ask a scholar you trust before repeating a completed wudu.

After wudu: the shahada

Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh.

"I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger."

Umar ibn al-Khattab reported that the Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ said whoever does wudu, does it well, and then says these words will have the eight gates of Paradise opened for him, to enter by whichever he wishes (Sunan an-Nasa'i 148, graded sahih). Dar al-Ifta gives the same words as the closing step of wudu.

The longer version

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55 reports the same hadith with wahdahu la sharika lah (alone, with no partner) and an extra line:

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ุงุฌู’ุนูŽู„ู’ู†ููŠ ู…ูู†ูŽ ุงู„ุชูŽู‘ูˆูŽู‘ุงุจููŠู†ูŽ ูˆูŽุงุฌู’ุนูŽู„ู’ู†ููŠ ู…ูู†ูŽ ุงู„ู’ู…ูุชูŽุทูŽู‡ูู‘ุฑููŠู†ูŽ

Allahumma-j'alni minat-tawwabin, waj'alni minal-mutatahhirin.

"O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves."

Imam at-Tirmidhi notes that this chain is inconsistent (mudtarib), and Sunnah.com shows it graded da'if. The core shahada is established by Nasa'i 148. Many Muslims add the extra line as a general dua; if you do, know that its chain is weaker than the shahada itself.

Is there a dua for each limb?

Many wudu booklets and posters give a different dua for the face, the arms, the head and the feet. Those wordings are not found in any of the narrations above. Dar al-Ifta's step-by-step guide gives Bismillah at the start, the shahada at the end, and nothing in between. Scholars have disagreed about whether the limb-by-limb duas have a reliable basis, so do not present them as the Prophet's ๏ทบ wording or worry that your wudu is incomplete without them.

The Quran describes the purpose of wudu itself: "It is not Allah's Will to burden you, but to purify you and complete His favour upon you, so perhaps you will be grateful" (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:6). Washing carefully and with presence is the act of worship.

"Allahummaghfir li dhanbi"

A popular dua said during wudu is Allahummaghfir li dhanbi, wa wassi' li fi dari, wa barik li fima razaqtani ("O Allah, forgive my sin, make my home spacious for me, and bless me in what You have provided me"). In Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3500 a man reports hearing it from the Prophet ๏ทบ at night; that report does not mention wudu, and it is graded da'if. It is a beautiful request for forgiveness, but it is not established as a dua specific to wudu.

A simple routine

  1. Make the intention in your heart and say Bismillah.
  2. Wash each part in order. For the full steps, see how to perform wudu.
  3. When you finish, say the shahada.
  4. Pray, or keep your wudu for the next salah. Check the time with Islamful's prayer times.

Frequently asked questions

What do you say before starting wudu?

Say Bismillah (in the name of Allah). Sunan Abi Dawud 101, Jami' at-Tirmidhi 25 and Sunan Ibn Majah 397 report that there is no wudu for the one who does not mention Allah's name over it.

What is the dua after wudu?

Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh. Sunan an-Nasa'i 148, graded sahih, promises that the eight gates of Paradise are opened for the one who says it after doing wudu well.

Is there a special dua for each part of wudu?

None of the narrations cited here gives a separate dua for washing each limb, and Egypt's Dar al-Ifta lists only Bismillah at the start and the shahada at the end. Scholars disagree about the popular limb-by-limb duas, so do not treat them as the Sunnah wording.
