Listening to music by itself does not break wudu. Whether listening is permissible is a separate question from whether you need to repeat ablution. This distinction matters when you hear a song in a shop, on a journey or through your phone before prayer.
Hearing something is not a listed wudu nullifier
Darul Ifta Birmingham’s Hanafi explanation of wudu nullifiers lists the relevant events and explains that answering a phone call does not itself invalidate ablution. Listening is not one of its listed nullifiers. This is the basis for distinguishing hearing a sound from a separate event that affects ritual purity; the cited answer is about a phone call, not a claim that music is permissible.
For example, if you made wudu and then heard background music while travelling, the sound alone is not a reason to repeat wudu. If you also used the toilet, that is a separate reason to renew it. Questions about another event should be assessed on their own terms and according to the school you follow.
Does that mean every kind of music is permissible?
No. Valid wudu does not settle whether an action is permitted. Scholars and institutions take different positions on music, and it would be misleading to use a ruling about purity to erase that disagreement.
Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta distinguishes music it permits from music it prohibits, with conditions concerning lyrics, conduct and circumstances. By contrast, Darul Ifta Birmingham’s answer about a gym playing music advises choosing an alternative setting. These are attributed positions, not a claim of unanimous agreement or personal permission for every recording.
For a decision about what you listen to, seek guidance from a qualified scholar you trust. For whether to renew wudu, consider the actual nullifiers instead of assuming every questionable action automatically invalidates it.
What should you do before prayer?
If you were in wudu and only heard music, do not treat the sound itself as proof you have lost it. Put away distractions and prepare for prayer. If something else happened that you are unsure about, ask about that specific circumstance.
Use Islamful’s prayer times to plan your next prayer. For another common everyday question, see whether eating breaks wudu. These guides help separate routine actions from the things that actually require a fresh ablution.
