Smoking and vaping are not on the list of things that break wudu. The scholarly sources reviewed here say smoking does not invalidate ablution, and none of them treats vaping as a nullifier. That is a separate question from whether vaping is permitted at all, which scholars answer differently and mostly negatively. This guide keeps the two apart.
The short answer
- Does smoking break wudu? No. Egypt's Dar al-Ifta states that smoking does not invalidate ablution, and Darul Ifta Birmingham gives the same answer.
- Does vaping break wudu? The sources reviewed do not name vaping as a nullifier. Vaping is not an exit from the front or back passage, and it is not one of the causes named in the texts.
- Is it fine to vape or smoke? That is a different question. Rulings on harm are covered below and in our guides on is vaping haram and is smoking haram.
What actually breaks wudu
The Prophet ï·º said that the prayer of one who has broken wudu is not accepted until he performs ablution (Sahih Muslim 225). When Abu Hurairah was asked what hadath is, he explained it as passing wind (Sahih al-Bukhari 176). Wudu is broken by recognised causes, such as things leaving the front or back passage and deep sleep. Inhaling smoke or vapour is not among them. For the wider list, read what breaks wudu.
What scholars say about smoking and wudu
Egypt's Dar al-Ifta answers that smoking does not invalidate ablution, adding that it is recommended to cleanse the mouth of the odour of smoke before prayer so as not to offend fellow worshippers (Does smoking invalidate ablution?).
Darul Ifta Birmingham gives the same ruling and says it is preferable to clean the mouth thoroughly before prayer or recitation of the Quran (Smoking break wudhu).
What this means for vaping
None of the sources reviewed rules on vaping and wudu directly. Reasoning from the smoking answers, vaping is not an exit from the passages and not a named nullifier, so it does not by itself break wudu. That is an inference from the sources above, not a quoted ruling, so ask a scholar if you want a ruling for your school.
Practical point: if you vape before prayer, rinse your mouth, as the smoking fatwas recommend for odour.
A separate question: is vaping permitted?
Whether wudu stays valid is not the same as whether the act is allowed.
- Darul Ifta Birmingham says vaping would not fall under the prohibitions of ihram, but is not advised, and is similar to smoking, which scholars have deemed haram or at least makruh tahrimi, very close to haram (Vaping During Ihraam).
- The Fatwa Committee of MUIS in Singapore rules the use of all types of vape and Kpod to be haram, in line with the ruling on cigarettes, based on the principle against what causes harm and the aim of protecting life and mind (MUIS fatwa on vape).
Vaping and fasting is a third question with its own answer; see does vaping break your fast.
What to do next
- Keep your wudu if you only smoked or vaped; renew it only if a recognised nullifier occurred, following how to perform wudu.
- Rinse your mouth before prayer.
- Check the next prayer time with the prayer times tool.
- If you want to quit, speak to your doctor and see the harm guidance in the linked guides.

Frequently asked questions
Does smoking break wudu?
No. Egypt's Dar al-Ifta and Darul Ifta Birmingham both say smoking does not invalidate wudu, and both recommend cleaning the mouth of the smell before prayer.
Does vaping break wudu?
The sources reviewed do not list vaping as a nullifier. By the same reasoning as the smoking rulings it does not break wudu, but that is an inference, so ask your scholar for a ruling in your school.
Is vaping haram even if it does not break wudu?
Many scholars say so. Singapore's MUIS rules all vapes haram on harm grounds, and Darul Ifta Birmingham says vaping is similar to smoking, deemed haram or at least makruh tahrimi.
Should I rinse my mouth after smoking or vaping before prayer?
Yes, it is recommended. The fatwas reviewed advise cleaning the mouth of the odour before prayer or Quran recitation, though this is not required to keep wudu valid.
