Green title card reading Does Precum Break Wudu?

Yes, precum breaks wudu. Known in Islamic law as madhi, it is the thin fluid released with arousal. It does not require ghusl. Wash the private part, clean anything it touched, and make wudu again before you pray.

That much comes straight from hadith. The sources checked here differ on one practical detail, how to clean clothes, which is covered below.

Quick answer

QuestionAnswer
Does precum break wudu?Yes
Does it require ghusl?No
Is it impure?Yes, according to the answers checked here
What should I do?Wash the private part, clean any soiled clothing, make wudu

The evidence

Ali ibn Abi Talib had this fluid often and, as the Prophet's ï·º son-in-law, asked someone else to put the question for him. The reply was: "Perform ablution after washing your organ" (Sahih al-Bukhari 269). Another narration of the same event says Ali felt shy, that Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad asked, and that the answer was that one has to perform ablution (Sahih al-Bukhari 178).

A longer report shows why this matters. Ali said he had been bathing so often that his back cracked. The Prophet ï·º told him not to, and to wash his penis and perform ablution for this fluid, adding that a bath was for a seminal emission (Sunan Abi Dawud 206, graded sahih by al-Albani). One wording also says to wash the testicles (Sunan Abi Dawud 208, graded sahih by al-Albani).

If you have been taking a full ghusl every time, this hadith is good news: you do not have to.

Precum, semen or wadi?

The ruling depends on which fluid it is. Darul Ifta Birmingham, a Hanafi service, describes three (Discharge of Mazi after sexual thoughts):

FluidDescriptionWhat it requires
Madhi (precum)Thin, clear, released with arousal, no ejaculationWudu
WadiThick, white, no smell, before or after urinatingWudu
Mani (semen)Thick, white, released at ejaculationGhusl

Another answer from the same service adds that madhi is thin and sticky, comes from both men and women, and usually leaves the body without the person knowing exactly when (Definition of mazi, mani and wadi). So finding a sticky mark later does not by itself mean you need ghusl.

The usual case, then, looks like this: arousal without climax, and a small clear or sticky trace. That is madhi. If it came with climax, follow the steps for ghusl instead.

What about clothes?

This is where the answers differ.

  • Washing the soiled part. Darul Ifta Birmingham treats madhi as impure and says the part of the body or clothing it touched must be washed (Discharge of Mazi after sexual thoughts). Another answer says the soiled portion is washed three times (Discharging of Madhi).
  • Sprinkling water. Sahl ibn Hunayf asked the Prophet ï·º what to do if it got on his clothes. He was told a handful of water sprinkled on the spot would be enough (Sunan Abi Dawud 210, graded hasan by al-Albani).

Which you follow depends on your school. If you are Hanafi, the answers above point to washing. A washing machine works for this, according to the same service, as long as no visible impurity remains after the wash (Mazi coming out after speaking to my wife).

If you are away from home and cannot wash, Darul Ifta Birmingham says prayer in clothes with a spot no bigger than the hollow of the palm is valid but undesirable, and that a larger amount makes it reprehensible. It recommends keeping tissue in your underwear to catch the fluid (Discharging of Madhi).

For women

The ruling is the same. Darul Ifta Birmingham says that if madhy reaches the labia minora, wudu breaks, and the area should be cleaned by istinja before making wudu. Only the external area needs cleaning, not inside the body (When is a woman obliged to perform istinja?). Everyday vaginal discharge is a separate question, covered in does discharge break wudu?.

A worked example

You made wudu earlier and were chatting with your spouse. Later you notice a small sticky spot on your underwear. There was no climax.

  1. Treat it as madhi. Ghusl is not needed.
  2. Wash the private part.
  3. Clean the spot on your underwear in the way your school teaches, or change them.
  4. Make wudu again.
  5. Pray.

If it keeps happening

The same service gives two pieces of advice for people who have this often. Keep a cloth or tissue in your underwear to protect it, and consider seeing a doctor if it continues. Someone with ongoing involuntary discharge may count as an excused person, which has its own rules on purity for clothes (Wudu and madhi). Ask a scholar whether that applies to you before assuming it does.

This guide cannot tell you what is causing it. If you also have pain when peeing, pain when you ejaculate or a high temperature, the NHS lists these among the symptoms of prostatitis and says to see a GP (NHS: Prostatitis).

If you keep doubting

Do not check yourself over and over. In the Hanafi school, a person is assumed to be pure unless they are certain otherwise, and the jurists caution against obsessive doubts about purity (Finding wetness after salah). If you did not see anything and have no clear reason to think something came out, carry on.

Your next step

A quick wash and a fresh wudu take a few minutes, so it helps to know how long you have. Check today's prayer times so you can leave yourself enough time before the next prayer ends.

Frequently asked questions

Does precum require ghusl?

No. In the hadith of Ali, the Prophet ï·º told him to wash his private part and make wudu for this fluid, and to bathe only for a seminal emission (Sunan Abi Dawud 206).

Does precum break wudu for women too?

Yes. Darul Ifta Birmingham says this fluid comes from both men and women, and that its exit requires wudu. For a woman, it says wudu breaks once the fluid reaches the labia minora.

Do I have to change my underwear because of precum?

You need to clean the soiled part, not necessarily change. Darul Ifta Birmingham says the soiled portion is washed three times, while a hadith in Abu Dawud mentions sprinkling a handful of water. Follow your school on which applies.

What if I am not sure whether anything came out?

A Darul Ifta Birmingham answer says purity is assumed unless you are certain of impurity, and that doubts should not be acted on without clear evidence. Do not renew wudu over a passing suspicion.
