Usually, take it off. A pimple patch is a sticker on the skin of your face, and wudu requires water to reach the skin of every part you wash. If the patch is only there for convenience and you can remove it without harm, peel it off before wudu and put a fresh one on afterwards.
The exception is a sore or open spot that water would hurt. In that case the rule for bandages applies: leave the patch on, wash the rest of your face, and wipe over the patch with wet fingers. This guide relies on fatwas from Darul Ifta Birmingham, which follows the Hanafi school; other schools were not checked here.
Quick answer
| Your situation | What to do in wudu |
|---|---|
| Patch on a closed spot, easy to remove | Remove it, wash your face, reapply after |
| Patch on an open or weeping spot, water would hurt it | Keep it on and wipe over it with wet fingers |
| The spot has healed | Remove the patch; wiping no longer counts |
| You made wudu and only later noticed the patch | Ask about repeating any prayers, see below |
Why water has to reach the skin
The wudu verse tells believers to wash their faces when they rise for prayer (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:6). Darul Ifta Birmingham explains the consequence: wudu is invalid and incomplete if something prevents water from reaching the skin of the parts that must be washed (Darul Ifta Birmingham, Wudhu With Makeup). In the same answer it says ordinary makeup usually does not form that kind of barrier.
A pimple patch is different from makeup. It is a solid layer stuck over a patch of skin, so the skin beneath it stays dry when you wash your face. This guide therefore treats it like other barriers: remove it when you reasonably can. Our guides to wudu with makeup on and water-resistant sunscreen cover the thinner layers.
When you can wipe over the patch instead
The same Quran verse that commands washing also says "It is not Allah's Will to burden you" (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:6), and Islamic law makes room for wounds that cannot be washed.
Darul Ifta Birmingham answered a case very close to a pimple patch: a person had a spot with liquid on their leg, and the hospital put a patch on it. The fatwa says that if you cannot wash or wipe the injured area because of the bandage, you must wipe over the bandage with wet hands for your ghusl to be valid (Darul Ifta Birmingham, fatwa 01598). That case was about ghusl; this guide applies the same reasoning to wudu.
The permission lasts as long as the injury does. Citing Imam al-Quduri, another Birmingham fatwa says wiping continues if the bandage falls off before the injury heals, but is no longer allowed once it has healed. If water still causes pain, the area may stay covered (Darul Ifta Birmingham, fatwa 03049).
In practice, a patch over a pimple you popped this morning that stings in water can be wiped over. A patch you put on overnight over a closed spot, purely to stop picking, should come off for wudu.
Does the pimple itself break wudu?
Pus that stays in the spot does not. Darul Ifta Birmingham says pus from a wound that does not flow out by itself does not break wudu, and that you can cover it with a plaster and carry on with wudu and salah as usual. If pus comes out beyond the plaster by itself, without pressing, renew your wudu (Darul Ifta Birmingham, Pus Coming Out of the Wound). For blood, see does bleeding break wudu.
Step by step
- Decide whether the patch can come off without harm. If yes, peel it off.
- Make wudu as normal, washing the whole face including the spot. Our step-by-step wudu guide walks through each part.
- If the patch must stay, wash the rest of your face around it, then pass wet fingers over the patch itself.
- After wudu, put a fresh patch on if you need one.
- Once the spot has healed, stop wiping and wash the skin directly again.
If you already prayed with a patch on
If the patch was easy to remove and you did not wipe over it, the wudu may not have been complete. The Birmingham fatwas checked here do not address making up prayers in this situation, so ask a local scholar of your school before deciding.
Before your next prayer, check the time remaining on Islamful prayer times so you have room to make wudu properly.

Frequently asked questions
Does a pimple patch break my wudu?
No. Putting a patch on after wudu does not break it. The question is only whether wudu made with the patch on was complete, because water has to reach the skin of the face.
Can I put a fresh pimple patch on after wudu?
Yes. Wash your face fully in wudu, then apply the patch. It will be in the way again at your next wudu, so remove it then if you can.
What if pus leaks out from under the patch?
Darul Ifta Birmingham says pus that stays in the wound does not break wudu, but if it comes out beyond the plaster by itself, without pressing, you renew your wudu.
