Sushi is not automatically haram. Fish sushi can be permissible when its other ingredients are permissible. Mufti Suhail Tarmahomed’s answer for Jamiatul Ulama KZN specifically allows raw-fish sushi on that condition. The useful question is what is in your particular roll, rice and sauce.

What to check before ordering
| Part of the order | Ask the restaurant |
|---|---|
| Fish or filling | Which species is it? Is the filling plain fish, shellfish, imitation crab or meat? |
| Seasoned rice | What is in the seasoning? Is mirin or sake added? |
| Sauce or glaze | Can I see the ingredients or the bottle? Is it included in the filling as well as on top? |
| Preparation | Are any ingredients or preparation steps outside the halal standard I follow? |
A menu label such as “vegetarian”, “cooked” or “seafood” does not answer every ingredient question. If staff cannot confirm a sauce, ask whether the dish can be made without it. Where available, check current halal certification and its scope.
Does sushi rice always contain mirin?
No. Do not confuse rice vinegar with rice wine or assume a recipe requires mirin. Kikkoman’s sushi-rice recipe uses rice vinegar, sugar and salt for the seasoning. That example does not certify every restaurant’s rice or every bottled seasoning. Ask about the actual recipe rather than treating all sushi rice alike.
Fish, eel, crab and shrimp: the Hanafi distinction
The relevant distinction is fish, not “fish with scales”. Darul Iftaa Chicago explicitly includes eel as fish and takes a restrictive position on non-fish seafood. Do not list eel as a shellfish. Shrimp requires a separate note: Faraz Rabbani’s Hanafi answer permits it. These sources should not be flattened into a universal ruling on every seafood filling.
For lobster specifically, see the separate school comparison. For a personal ruling, give a qualified scholar the species and the complete ingredient list, including the rice seasoning and sauces.
A practical ordering question
“Can you confirm the ingredients in the rice seasoning, filling and sauce, including any mirin or sake?” This is more useful than asking only whether the fish is raw. Keep the product label or menu information if you need to verify an unfamiliar ingredient later.

Frequently asked questions
Is raw-fish sushi haram?
Raw fish alone does not make sushi haram. Jamiatul Ulama KZN permits fish sushi when it contains no prohibited ingredients.
Does sushi rice always contain mirin?
No. Recipes vary; rice vinegar, sugar and salt can season sushi rice without mirin. Check the restaurant’s actual ingredients.
Is eel a non-fish seafood in Hanafi rulings?
No. Darul Iftaa Chicago explicitly classifies eel with fish. Its sauce and other preparation ingredients still need checking.
