The Evidence
The prohibition of gold for men comes from several clear hadiths.
From the Hadith
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
ุฃูุญูููู ุงูุฐููููุจู ููุงููุญูุฑููุฑู ููุฅูููุงุซู ุฃูู ููุชููุ ููุญูุฑููู ู ุนูููู ุฐููููุฑูููุง
Uhilla adh-dhahab wal-hariru li-inathi ummati, wa hurrima 'ala dhukuriha
"Gold and silk have been made lawful for the females of my Ummah and forbidden for the males."
[Narrated by Al-Nasa'i, 5148; Ibn Majah, 3640 โ graded Sahih]
In another hadith, the Prophet ๏ทบ took silk in his right hand and gold in his left and declared:
ููุฐูุงูู ุญูุฑูุงู ู ุนูููู ุฐููููุฑู ุฃูู ููุชูู
Hadhani haramun 'ala dhukuri ummati
"These two are haram for the males of my Ummah."
[Narrated by Abu Dawud, 4057; Ahmad, 19415 โ graded Sahih]
The Prophet ๏ทบ also once saw a gold ring on a man's hand, removed it, and threw it aside saying: "Does one of you intentionally pick up a live coal and hold it in his hand?" โ then permitted men to use silver rings instead. [Narrated by Muslim, 2090]
The evidence is extensive and consistent. There is no authentic narration that permits gold for men.
Scholar Opinions
All four major schools of Islamic law agree that gold is haram for men.
| School | Ruling for Men | Ruling for Women |
|---|---|---|
| Hanafi | Haram | Permitted |
| Maliki | Haram | Permitted |
| Shafi'i | Haram | Permitted |
| Hanbali | Haram | Permitted |
Imam Al-Nawawi (Shafi'i) stated in Al-Majmu' that the prohibition of gold for men is established by mass-transmitted hadiths and is a matter of scholarly consensus (ijma').
Ibn Qudama (Hanbali) in Al-Mughni confirmed that wearing gold in any form โ rings, chains, or bracelets โ is forbidden for men, and that this prohibition extends to all gold items worn on the body.
Ibn Abidin (Hanafi) specified in Radd al-Muhtar that the prohibition covers all forms of adornment with gold, whether the item is exclusively gold or gold-plated. Similarly, how Islam approaches other personal adornment questions โ like is makeup haram and are tattoos haram โ follows the same principle of weighing evidence carefully.
Conditions and Gray Areas
The core ruling is clear, but some commonly asked scenarios deserve attention.
White gold: The majority of scholars hold that white gold remains haram for men. White gold is an alloy of yellow gold mixed with palladium or nickel โ it is chemically still gold (Au). A minority of contemporary scholars permit it on the grounds that it has changed form, but this is not the mainstream position.
Gold-plated items: Most scholars treat gold-plated watches, rings, or accessories as prohibited for men, as the outer layer is still gold. However, if the plating is extremely thin and negligible (like the plating on some electronic components), there is more flexibility.
Dental fillings and medical use: Scholars broadly permit the use of gold crowns, fillings, or medical implants out of necessity (darurah). When there is no suitable alternative, necessity lifts the prohibition.
Holding or using gold items: The prohibition is specifically on wearing gold for adornment. A man handing over a gold coin, gifting jewelry, or trading in gold is not violating this ruling.
Common Questions
Q: Can men wear silver? Yes โ silver is explicitly permitted for men. The Prophet ๏ทบ himself wore a silver ring. Silver rings, bracelets, and other silver items are allowed for men as long as they are not extravagant. You can explore more halal and haram rulings at our Haram Checker.
Q: Is it haram to buy gold as an investment? No. Owning gold as an investment or savings (bullion, coins, etc.) is permissible. The prohibition is specifically on wearing gold as adornment. However, Islamic finance rules around gold trading apply โ you can read more in our article on is interest haram.
Q: What if a man accidentally wears gold? If a man unknowingly wore a gold item, he is not sinful for that moment. Once he knows, he must remove it. Islam does not punish for acts done in ignorance before knowledge reaches a person.
Summary
Gold is haram for Muslim men and halal for Muslim women. This ruling is firmly established by multiple authentic hadiths and is agreed upon by all four schools of Islamic jurisprudence. For the broader framework on how Islamic law reaches these conclusions, see halal vs haram. Men must avoid wearing gold in any form โ rings, chains, bracelets, or watches โ regardless of color or plating. Medical necessity is an exception. Women face no restriction.
Key conditions:
- Men: gold is haram in all forms of adornment
- Women: gold is fully permitted
- All: investing in or trading gold is permitted
- Exception: medical necessity permits gold for men

Frequently Asked Questions
Is gold haram in Islam?
Gold is haram for Muslim men to wear. For Muslim women, gold is fully permitted. This ruling is based on multiple authentic hadiths in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explicitly prohibited gold for men.
Can Muslim men wear white gold?
The majority of scholars hold that white gold is also haram for men because it is still gold (Au) regardless of color. Some contemporary scholars permit it if it has been alloyed to the point where it is technically a different substance, but the majority position is that it remains prohibited.
Is wearing a gold ring haram for men?
Yes. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) specifically used a gold ring as an example when prohibiting gold for men, then removed it and switched to a silver ring. This makes gold rings explicitly forbidden for men.
