How to Wear Hijab: Step-by-Step Styles and Rules

Maybe you are putting on hijab for the first time, or you have worn it for years and it still slips by lunchtime. Either way, it helps to separate two questions: what Islam actually asks of you, and how to make the scarf stay put.

What is hijab, and is it obligatory?

In everyday use, "hijab" means the head covering. In the Quran and in Islamic law it is broader: it describes modest dress and conduct as a whole. The scarf is one part of that.

Covering is obligatory (fard) for a Muslim woman once she reaches puberty. This is the position of all four Sunni schools. The main evidence is two verses.

Allah (SWT) says in Surah An-Nur, 24:31:

وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ

Wal-yadribna bi-khumurihinna 'ala juyubihinn

"And let them draw their head coverings over their chests."

A khimar was the head cloth women already wore. The verse did not introduce it; it told women to bring it down over the neckline. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) described the early Muslim women's response: when this verse was revealed, they tore their wraps and covered themselves with them (Narrated by Bukhari, 4758).

In Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:59, Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ to instruct the believing women:

يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَابِيبِهِنَّ

Yudnina 'alayhinna min jalabibihinn

"To draw their outer garments close around them."

Before you begin: the conditions of hijab

Scholars drew a set of conditions from the Quran and Sunnah. The scarf is only valid hijab if the whole outfit meets them. IslamQA's summary of the requirements lists them in detail. In short, your clothing should be:

• Covering — hair, ears, neck, chest, arms and legs are covered
• Opaque — no see-through fabric
• Loose — not tight enough to show the shape of the body
• Not an attraction in itself — no dress designed to draw eyes
• Not resembling men's clothing — the Prophet ﷺ cursed women who imitate men and men who imitate women (Narrated by Bukhari, 5885)
• Unperfumed when going out among non-mahram men

The Prophet ﷺ warned about "women who are clothed yet naked" (Narrated by Muslim, 2128). That describes clothing that technically covers but is so thin or tight that it defeats the purpose. It is the main thing to keep in mind when you shop.

Do you need to cover your face?

Those who do not require the face veil often cite the report that the Prophet ﷺ told Asma bint Abi Bakr that once a girl reaches puberty, nothing should be seen of her except her face and hands (Narrated by Abu Dawud, 4104). Be aware that Abu Dawud himself noted a break in its chain; al-Albani graded it sound due to supporting routes, while others consider it weak.

How to wear hijab: step by step

These steps work for the most common style, a rectangular or large square scarf. Get the base right and every other style becomes easier.

Step 1: Start with an underscarf

Tie your hair back low, then pull on an underscarf cap (sometimes called a bonnet or ninja cap). It covers stray hairs, stops slippery fabric from sliding, and gives pins something to grip.

Common mistake: a high bun under a thin scarf. It pulls the scarf backwards and exposes the front of the hairline within an hour.

Step 2: Drape the scarf

Place the scarf over your head with the front edge sitting just past your hairline. Let one side hang longer than the other, roughly two-thirds and one-third.

Step 3: Secure under the chin

Bring both sides together under your chin and fasten with a safety pin or a magnet. Check in the mirror that no hair shows at the forehead or temples.

Step 4: Wrap the long side

Take the longer side across your throat, over the top of your head, and pin it behind the opposite ear. This double layer is what covers the neck properly.

Step 5: Bring it down over your chest

Let the remaining fabric fall loosely over your chest and shoulders. This is the part the verse names directly, so do not tuck it into your collar or throw it back over your shoulder.

Step 6: Final check

Turn side to side in the mirror. Hair, ears, neck and chest should all be covered, and you should not be able to see through the fabric in good light.

Three easy everyday styles

Once the base is in place, the style is personal. Here are three that meet the conditions and suit different days.

For sport, a breathable slip-on style is usually safest, because pins can be a hazard and wraps come loose when you move.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Showing the neck. Styles that leave the throat or chest bare, such as a turban with a low neckline, do not meet the wording of 24:31. Add a high-neck layer underneath.
• Sheer fabric. Chiffon is popular, but a single layer is often see-through. Wear it over an opaque underscarf.
• Tight clothes with a scarf. A hijab paired with skinny jeans and a fitted top covers the head but misses the condition of loose clothing.
• Hijab only outside. The obligation applies in front of non-mahram men, which includes cousins and in-laws visiting your home.
• Heavy perfume. Fragrance that others can notice in public is one of the listed conditions, even when the scarf itself is perfect.
