Muslims all over the world mention his name in every one of their daily prayers. None of them has ever seen a picture of him, and none ever will. What they know about him comes from the Quran and thousands of carefully recorded reports about how he lived.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the final messenger of Allah, born in Mecca around 570 CE, who received the Quran over 23 years and died in Medina at 63. Muslims believe he brought the same message as the prophets before him: worship Allah alone. The Quran calls him "the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets" (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:40). No prophet comes after him.

Here is the story of his life, the kind of person he was, and why he matters to Muslims today.
What Was His Early Life Like?
His full name was Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, of the clan of Banu Hashim in the tribe of Quraysh, the leading tribe of Mecca.
He was born into loss. His father 'Abdullah died before he was born. His mother Aminah died when he was about six. His grandfather 'Abd al-Muttalib took him in, and when his grandfather died two years later, his uncle Abu Talib raised him.
As a young man he worked as a shepherd and later as a trader. He earned a reputation in Mecca that stayed with him for life. People called him al-Amin, "the trustworthy," and left their valuables with him. That trust lasted even after many of them turned against his message.
At around 25 he married Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, a respected businesswoman who had hired him to lead a trade caravan. The classical biographies report that she was about 40. Their marriage lasted about 25 years, until her death, and he took no other wife while she was alive.
How Did the Revelation Begin?
In his late thirties, Muhammad ﷺ began to spend long stretches alone in a cave called Hira, on a mountain outside Mecca, reflecting and worshipping.
'A'isha (may Allah be pleased with her) described what happened next. When he was 40, the angel Jibril (Gabriel) came to him in the cave and commanded him: "Read." He answered that he could not read. After this happened three times, the angel recited the first verses of the Quran (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3):
اقرأ باسم ربك الذي خلق خلق الإنسان من علق اقرأ وربك الأكرم الذي علم بالقلم علم الإنسان ما لم يعلم
Iqra' bismi rabbika alladhi khalaq. Khalaqa al-insana min 'alaq. Iqra' wa rabbuka al-akram. Alladhi 'allama bil-qalam. 'Allama al-insana ma lam ya'lam.
"Recite in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not." (Surah Al-Alaq, 96:1-5)
He came home shaking and asked to be covered. Khadijah comforted him and was the first person to believe in his message. The same hadith records her reassurance: Allah would never disgrace him, because he kept family ties, helped the weak, and honoured his guests.
What Happened in Mecca and Medina?
Ibn 'Abbas summarised the whole mission in one sentence. The Prophet ﷺ received revelation at forty, stayed in Mecca for thirteen years, migrated, lived ten years in Medina, and died at sixty-three (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3902).
The Meccan Years
For the first few years the message spread quietly among family and close friends. Once he preached openly, the leaders of Quraysh pushed back hard. His call to worship one God threatened the idols in the Ka'bah, and the pilgrimage trade that came with them.
Early Muslims, especially those without tribal protection, were beaten, boycotted, and some were killed. A group migrated to Abyssinia, where a Christian king gave them refuge.
Around 619 CE, both Khadijah and Abu Talib died. Muslims remember it as the Year of Sorrow. He had lost his wife and his protector within a short time.
The Medinan Years
In 622 CE the Prophet ﷺ and his followers migrated to the city of Yathrib, later called Medina. This migration, the Hijrah, is so central that the Islamic calendar starts from it.
In Medina, he was a prophet and also the leader of a community. He built the first mosque, joined the migrants and the local Muslims in brotherhood, and set out agreements with the city's other tribes.
| Year (CE) | Event |
|---|---|
| c. 570 | Born in Mecca |
| c. 595 | Marries Khadijah |
| 610 | First revelation in the cave of Hira |
| 619 | Year of Sorrow: deaths of Khadijah and Abu Talib |
| 622 | Hijrah to Medina; start of the Islamic calendar |
| 624 | Battle of Badr |
| 628 | Treaty of Hudaybiyyah with Quraysh |
| 630 | Enters Mecca peacefully; the Ka'bah is cleared of idols |
| 632 | Farewell Pilgrimage, then his death in Medina |
When he entered Mecca in 630, the city that had persecuted and expelled him surrendered with very little fighting, and he pardoned its people. Two years later he performed his only Hajj, the Farewell Pilgrimage. He died in Medina a few months after, at 63 (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3536).
What Was His Character Like?
The Quran describes him in one line:
وإنك لعلى خلق عظيم
Wa innaka la'ala khuluqin 'azim
"And indeed, you are of a great moral character." (Surah Al-Qalam, 68:4)
When 'A'isha was asked about his character, she answered: "His character was the Quran" (Narrated by Muslim, 746). He lived what he taught.
The people closest to him describe a man who was humble and gentle:
- He helped at home. Asked what he did in his house, 'A'isha said he kept busy serving his family, and when the time for prayer came, he went out to pray (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 676).
- He never used foul language. 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr reported that he was never obscene, and that he used to say, "The best of you are those with the best character" (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3559).
- He was a mercy. Allah says: "We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds" (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:107).
This is why Muslims look to his life for guidance on ordinary things, like how to eat, greet people, or treat a spouse, and not only for worship. Allah says: "There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example" (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:21).

Muslims hold a clear, balanced position on the Prophet ﷺ.
He was a human being, not divine. The Quran is direct: "Muhammad is not but a messenger. Other messengers have passed on before him" (Surah Aal-Imran, 3:144). Muslims do not worship him or pray to him. Worship belongs to Allah alone.
He was the final prophet. He is khatam an-nabiyyin, the seal of the prophets (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:40). His message confirms the prophets before him, including Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa (peace be upon them).
Following him is part of faith. The second half of the shahada, Muhammadun rasul Allah, is a commitment to accept his teaching as the way to worship Allah. His sayings and practice, the sunnah, are the second source of Islamic guidance after the Quran.
Muslims send blessings on him. The Quran commands it:
إن الله وملائكته يصلون على النبي ۚ يا أيها الذين آمنوا صلوا عليه وسلموا تسليما
Inna Allaha wa mala'ikatahu yusalluna 'ala an-nabi. Ya ayyuha alladhina amanu sallu 'alayhi wa sallimu taslima
"Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels. O you who have believed, ask blessing upon him and ask for him peace." (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:56)
That is why Muslims say ﷺ (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, "peace and blessings of Allah be upon him") after his name. He said that whoever sends one blessing upon him, Allah sends ten blessings upon that person (Narrated by Muslim, 384).
How Can You Follow His Example Today?
Learning about the Prophet ﷺ is meant to change how you live. A few simple places to start:
- Pray the way he prayed. He said to pray as you have seen him pray (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 631). Our guide to how to pray salah for beginners walks through it step by step, and how to pray the sunnah prayers covers the extra prayers he kept.
- Work on your character. Pick one trait from his life, like patience, honesty, or gentleness at home, and practise it for a week.
- Send salawat daily. Saying sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam is short and earns ten blessings each time.
- Read his life. A good biography (seerah) makes the Quran easier to understand, because you learn what was happening when each part was revealed.
- Ask what the Quran says. Our free Quran Answers tool helps you find the verses on any question you have.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who was Prophet Muhammad in Islam?
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the final messenger of Allah, born in Mecca around 570 CE. At age 40 he began receiving the revelation of the Quran, which continued for 23 years. Muslims follow his example, the sunnah, and believe no prophet comes after him (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:40).
How old was Prophet Muhammad when he died?
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) died at the age of sixty-three, according to 'A'isha (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3536). Ibn 'Abbas added that he received revelation at forty, stayed thirteen years in Mecca, then lived ten years in Medina before he died (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3902). His death is dated to 632 CE.
What was the first revelation to Prophet Muhammad?
The first revelation to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came in the cave of Hira near Mecca, when the angel Jibril commanded him to read. The first verses revealed were the opening of Surah Al-Alaq, 96:1-5, beginning "Recite in the name of your Lord who created" (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3).
Why do Muslims say peace be upon him after his name?
Muslims say "peace be upon him" (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) after Prophet Muhammad because the Quran commands believers to send blessings and peace upon him (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:56). He also said that whoever sends one blessing upon him, Allah sends ten blessings upon that person (Narrated by Muslim, 384).
Why are there no pictures of Prophet Muhammad?
Mainstream Islamic scholarship forbids depicting Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in images, to protect his honour and to guard against any form of veneration that could lead toward worship. Muslims instead learn about him through detailed written descriptions of his appearance, character, and daily life preserved in the hadith.
